Hit Die

Rules Questions

I'm still a little confused about how hit die work when leveling up. How do I add HP to a character as it levels?

Example: Level One Monk with a Con Bonus of +2. A monk's hit die is d8, so the character would start off with 10 HP. When the monk gets to level 2, I roll 1d8 for HP increase, right? Do I add the Con Bonus to that roll? And when the monk reaches level 3, how many d8 do I roll?

Every time you gain a level in a class, you roll the HD for that class, add to it your Con bonus, and take that total and add it to your total hp.

Using your example:

You take your second level in monk. You roll a d8, add your Con bonus of+:

hp roll for Monk 2: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Now, we add 7 hp to the 10 you have, to get 17 total. That's your new hp total.

Let's continue. You level up again, gaining your third level and go with monk again. So now....

hp roll for Monk 3: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Now we take thos 5 hp, add them to your previous total of 17. Your hp total as a 3rd level monk is 22.

Got it?

So it's a roll of one die for every level, no matter what that level is. Thank you.

Correct. Your 3rd level monk has rolled 3 hit dice, all d8, to get to that level. If you live to 20th level and all your levels are in monk, it'll be 20 hit dice you have, all d8.

And if the monk takes a level in a different class, I roll for that class. Like a ranger's d10.

Yup. So let's take your character who is a 3rd level monk. Now you level up again, taking that ranger level.

level up as ranger: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

We add this to the 22 hp you already had. Now you have 34 hp. You've still rolled 4 hit dice (well, 3 rolls and the max given at 1st level): 3d8 and 1d10.

Yep, but regardless of which character class you choose, you always get your bonus hit points from having a high Constitution modifier, even retroactively if you choose to increase your Constitution score on later levels.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up.

Also, you may be getting a bonus hit point each level due to favored class.

If a character's Constitution score changes enough to alter his or her Constitution modifier, the character's hit points also increase or decrease accordingly.

So if your Constitution modifier go's up or down so to dose your added Hit Points. Like if you got a Belt of Constitution +2 (+1 to modifier).

1st Monk, 8+3=11 Hit Points total

2nd Monk, (1d8+3) rolled 5+3 plus 11( from 1st)= 19 Hit Points total

3rd Monk, (1d8+3) rolled 3+3 plus 19 (from 2nd)= 25 Hit Points total

3rd/1st Monk/Ranger, (1d10+3) rolled 10+3 plus 25 (from 3rd)= 38 Hit Points total

The +1 modifier increase is added to each level you have.
