Pathfinder and the World Of Oo(Adventure Time)

Sovereign Court

So, I was wondering, my friend gave me the wonderful idea to do a conversion of the setting in Adventure Time to Pathfinder, or at least something similar.

The world on the surface looks like a mix of modern and fantasy, with magic and such being prominent. However, under it all is the history that the world itself used to be much different, and far more like our own, until the lich king came and destroyed it all, shortly before billy(a powerful hero) stoped the lich from destroying all life.

Now, oviously this can't convert exactly to Pathfinder, so I was thinking more along the lines of a similar world.
Any ideas?

Other notes:

Now, I wanna note there are alot if things in the world of oo that are just hinted at, such as "The Great Mushroom War" which from context is the nuclear apocalypse

As well as before the rise of the Ice King, Marceline's Father and her history, and many more things.

There where the dog wars with the rainicorn, the fact that alot of the monsters eat humans, and that there is alot more dark and adult themes in the show than an adult would think.

It's a good show, and for more than just one reason.

How accurate a conversion are you thinking of?

It would probably be pretty straight-forward to create a setting with a similar back-story to Oo. You could use the Pathfinder technology guide or say d20 Modern as a basis for advanced equipment from a past age. Humans would be extinct (or near extinct) with the vast majority of PCs and NPCs being exotic non-human races. To give such a world a feel closer to Adventure Time you'd probably even want to avoid most of the standard fantasy races such as elves and dwarves and go more for animal-like humanoids, plant based characters, elemental based characters etc.

Trying to closely replicate the world of Oo using Pathfinder rules would require a lot more work, mainly down to replicating the races and creating balanced player character races - there are a LOT of sentient beings in Oo which would potentially create a lot of work to stat up. Even the 'familiar' fantasy monsters such as vampires and werewolves are somewhat different here.

If you consider the main characters of Adventure Time as the PCs in an adventuring party, Finn would be straightforward (but potentially under-powered compared to others). Jake doesn't seem to have a lot of 'class' abilities, but his racial abilities are very powerful, potentially game-breaking (unless you nerf them in some way for Pathfinder). BMo, PB, Marcelena etc. might also be PCs or close NPC allies, they have a wide range of abilities.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, and to be honest, I was thinking along the lines of using the two Sphere rules, like spheres of power and might. Magic works differently in oo and honestly in thinking more along the lines of a similar world if anything.

90% of the work would definitely go into races and monsters
As for powers and such, Jake's power actually originates from a demon, other than that he's just an anthropomorphic dog. And sheres of power can explain that a bit through the alteration magic sphere and the size alteration.

Not worth making rules for all the races in the lands of Oo even the official adventure times RPG didn't bother to make a list of races.

They simply let people make whatever they want with advantages/disadvantages.

In PF if you want to do it...simply let players make their own races, put a limit on the RP and like usual, just check on them to make sure that they aren't going to break the game.

The candy people are like warforged made of candy.
Free willed constructs.
Lumpy space people are aberrations that levitate.

Dotting for interest.

There are plenty of settings out there where the world is built on the ruins of an old civilisation, so you could try to find some of the stories out there for some more inspiration (I do love the world of Oo though).

One thing that I found fun was that the 4 fundamental forces in Oo aren't Earth Fire Air and Water, they're Slime Fire Candy and Ice (I think? is that right?). You could play around with that if you want to actually set it in Oo.

I think Eltacolibre is right, designing all the races would be an absolutely mammoth task, but letting people design their own races would really fit the feel of Adventure Time.

Anyway, I'm interested to see what people come up with here =)

EDIT: Eltacolibre is also right about the GM being the arbiter of whether or not a player-made race is broken and OP or not, that's an important part of this.
