Need a conflict... kind of...

I need some help. I am about to start the CotCT AP.
One of my players wants to play a magus who came home to Korvosa after participating in a war or conflict. Does anybody have an idea which conflict this could've been? I thought about the Worldwound, but this seems a bit too far fetched. Or could there have been a recent skirmish with the Shoanti or the Orks of Belkzen?
Before I come up with an idea of my own, I hope to find some help here...

It could be the constant skirmishes between Noth Mathis and MolthuNE (which is going to be the basis of the next AP) or the constant cold war between Taldor and Cheliax.

Is he averse to being a "former" (sort of) Hellknight? There are always campaigns being run by the Hellknights to fight "important" foes that the order sees as necessary to destroy for the sake of civilization.

Beyond that, a sort of campaign against some "Riddleport-related" pirates - a group not officially sanctioned by or friends with Riddleport (so as to avoid a true war), but totally "secretly" besties with the pirate lords; who were too well organized to ignore as one-offs - is neither far-fetched nor unlikely.

I'd suggest shying away from Shoanti-as-villains, if only to make temporary alliances possible later.

Maybe they were in the Cheliaxan fleet that was sent to fight the pirates of the Shackles in Skull and Shackles. That might be a fun reason for a "homecoming".
