Even in the Star Wars universe itself, anyone could use a Lightsaber, just not necessarily very well. Example: Han Solo on Hoth right after Luke went down to hypothermia -- used it to cut open the Tauntaun to make a warm place for Luke to stay until the rescuers could com.

Yeah... but this ain't Star Wars

in the playtest Owen was able to manifest a fire based and then gravity based sword...

From what I saw the 'energy blade' did slashing damage. On the first hit in the video he even had to correct himself from fire to slashing and it was stated as slashing at least one other time.

They ran through 3 combat and he was Solar focused in the first and (I think second) and gravity focused in the last but it never changed what his sword did.

Apparently after 3 rounds the Solarian's focus 'charges up' and he was able to use a "supernova blast" effect in the first fight for an AOE fire blast centered on himself with a 20' radius.

Then in the third fight where he was gravity focused after the 3rd round he used a power to increase the gravity between his target and a square he wanted to move it to but the enemy made it's save.

But I think the ability to make an energy blade of some kind was a Solarian power, not gear.

Yeah, i suppose i was just assuming that the Solarion could choose how their weapon manifested. It would be neat if they had a different set of options depending on it they were attuned to energy or entropy but its all speculation beyond being able to do slashing damage at this point.

And i also agree that the weapon seemed like it was a class ability but beam swords are a thing well beyond star wars and i would really be surprised if there was nothing like it available to other classes. The Solarion should still have something unique they can do with theirs but a melee weapon that targets EAC should also exist somewhere on the weapon spectrum.

I'm pretty sure the first two are a no, but being the arch-foe of James Bond has an appeal.

:P

I was thinking more of a Special Tactics and Reconnaissance agent but there is also room for evil spies in space.

I think he meant Mass Effect's Spectres

Eh, the universe is big enough for both though. Lets let the Spectres fight Spectre. in space. with laser swords and explosions.

Don't cross the streams!

I bet there will be energy bladed melee options as gear for the exact reason you stated.

But the characters in the playtest were only level 2 so I doubt we got an exhaustive view of their classes potential powers in any case.

Liberty's Edge

Maybe at higher level they can attune their energy blade and change its damage type to the energy they are focussing

That wouldnt surprise me in the slightest. i can easily see fire, electricity and physical attached to the Solar/star/energy side and cold, corrosive and physical again attached to the gravity/entropy side

Weapon tricks depending on side and level of attunement would be pretty easy too.

I do wonder about how things like Kasatha will be handled as a core race... but just think, a cyber enhanced Kasatha Soldier with beam swords IS General Grievous! :P

Liberty's Edge

If we try to fit PFRPG energy types, I would say Sonic is solar/energy and Force is gravity/entropy

Quite an interesting take on yin/yang here BTW

I left those two out as they have odd places in Pathfinder and am not sure how they will be handled in Starfinder. i could see them going either way... or both ways really though. Probably with some kind of reduced damage due to how infrequently they are resisted.

They pretty firmly established in the playtest (IMO) the Solar is fire with the supernova power he used.

Does anybody keeping up on Starfinder better me have an idea if Starfinder classes/etc will be back-portable to Pathfinder in some way? I know they have said they will be compatable in some sense but not necessarily balanced... Just wondering if at least some classes (the new takes on casters, primarily) could be run as balanced PC classes in Pathfinder context, without any tech-centric features.

I mean, it doesn't seem impossible that these new-paradigm casters could start to manifest before Golarion made tech-leap and Gap happened...??? That also seems a neat way to foreshadow or establish pre-quel canon, so to speak...?

Once you remove the tech-centric features, you might as well be playing standard Pathfinder classes.

You might as well... unless you're interested in the foreshadowing and continuity aspects that I mentioned in bolded part, but you cut out. Or, just exploring the "starfarers crashed on primitive planet with no/limited gear" trope within the Starfinder timeline.

Well, i prefer to think of it as "at least fire" instead of "only deals fire" i could see a higher level augmentation that deals plasma damage "fire/electricity" or even more esoteric and going "holy" damage.

Yeah I could see the Plasma thing as well. Not sure about Holy though. With the revelation that magic is no longer divided into Divine or Arcane I am very interested to see how the 'Holy/Unholy' tags are treated in magic.

I cant recall the specifics and its certainly not clearly stated but my impression of Solarions is that they draw power from Creation and Entropy which are symbollically represented as stars being Energy, Life and Creation balanced by black holes are Gravity, Death and Entropy.

I keep thinking of the class being a Kineticist-Monk hybrid who chooses talents based on those two paths and they increase with level, so an Energy spec'd Solarion would start with a fire blade and that would bump up to expanded fire damage, maybe plasma, and buff/restorative powers whereas if they spec'f for entropy they have a cold or physical damage blade and debuffing/negative energy powers.

I could be way off those as the playtest Solarion seemed to be able to freely switch between the two paths and we only got to see one or two powers from each side.

My most interested in class so far though and by a wide margin.

I wish I could remember where I read it but I am nearly sure they have said that the Solarion will always have access to both energy sides and how they 'balance' their use allows them to power up. So I don't think you necessarily have to choose or focus only on one or the other.

IIRC they even said that that in the higher levels you will need to use both sides to enact the more powerful abilities.

So we are agreed than? This needs to be the first class previewed.
