Hello all,
I couldn't find a thread anywhere addressing this so I'm sorry if this was settled already and I'm just asking again. I've been playing society for a couple years and my main character is a tattooed sorcerer with a familiar. I used to play where when delivering touch spells through the familiar, I would use any spells(including ranged ones) that were not area based(things like snowball, acid arrow).
Somewhere along the way, someone said that the deliver touch spells through familiar only applied to melee touch. I'm not sure what the reasoning for this is, as the ability states:
If the master is 3rd level or higher, a familiar can deliver touch spells for him. If the master and the familiar are in contact at the time the master casts a touch spell, he can designate his familiar as the “toucher.” The familiar can then deliver the touch spell just as the master would. As usual, if the master casts another spell before the touch is delivered, the touch spell dissipates.
It doesn't specify melee touch or ranged touch as far as I can tell, so I would rule that it applies to both. The only part that might be misleading is when it says "the 'toucher,'" but right after it says deliver the touch(unspecified as to melee or range) spell as the master would.
All help is appreciated,
~Primus

"ranged touch" is not a catagory for a spell. It is what you make when you cast some spells.
Touch: You must touch a creature or object to affect it. A touch spell that deals damage can score a critical hit just as a weapon can. A touch spell threatens a critical hit on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a successful critical hit. Some touch spells allow you to touch multiple targets. You can touch up to 6 willing targets as part of the casting, but all targets of the spell must be touched in the same round that you finish casting the spell. If the spell allows you to touch targets over multiple rounds, touching 6 creatures is a full-round action.

so the idea is you cast a touch spell with your familiar on you or touching you, like Shocking Grasp(ouch!), and then your familiar becomes the caster (share spells-> deliver touch spells) and then your familiar can run off and touch someone with the spell...
ranged touches are something you direct to a distance & target and try to hit them using your ranged attack modifiers. So ranged touch and touch are not the same. It takes a metamagic feat, Reach at +1 spell level, to give a touch spell range to become a ranged touch spell.
This technique is good if the familiar can get to places that you can't and you need to hit that target with a particular spell. It's also good to buff your friends. Just remember that everyone knows that your familiar is easy to kill and that will put a crimp in your day. If you use your familiar in combat it becomes a target.

"Nanny uses Greebo to pass out healing spells.. doesn't everyone love him?" The old Taldan witch holds up a scared car that looks like 30 pounds of ill will made manifest.
OOC: Between Scar and 'my little kitten' Granny makes for a fairly good 'clutch healer'. Healing Hex + Scar = HEALING FROM MILES!
