The Mummy trailer
I swear you were the only one I would not have minded ninja'ing me posting the trailer.

Looks very, very dumb. Count me in! The first half of the trailer actually made me really interested with no narration and vague feeling of dread. But the second half was just action movie schlock. Though the mummy looks kinda fun.
Right? They had me at the first half, but lost me at the second half. Waiting for stream.

The first half was for me: Oh...is this Mission Impossible 5? (or 6 or whatever number they are on)
Personally if they are going to build a Universal Monster universe, would rather it be closer in setting to Penny Dreadful than this.
I'd sign up for that, sadly the big screen is DorritosDewXXXXXXtreme or bust these days :(

Indeed. I'm hoping that they will have more dread and actual horror than what they show in the trailer, but I have no faith in modern movie makers or their "action and explosions above all else" majority audience.

... unless, of course, they choose to jettison it and reboot again.
Good lord that movie was awful.
That's what I'm hoping - that DU will in no way, shape, or form be connected to this reboot of the monster shared universe.
Agreed, it was terrible. I thank the gods I never paid (more than my usual cable bill) to see it.

*looks back at The Mummy and sequels*
I get people saying this has too much action. (Generic explosions, action flick plane tumbling, etc.) But not enough horror? I'm seeing not enough comedy from where I'm standing. The male lead is sullen and uninteresting, and the female lead is just a distressed set piece. The characters made even the sequels entertaining, but I can't see Cruise displaying personality.
On the bright side, the double-pupil shot was really cool.

Hopefully, they won't make the mistake with this modern shared universe of trying to make Dracula an anti-hero. He's a villain, a bad buy, a damned monster. If they can keep that s%~% straight, there might be some hope.
Universal execs have already stated that Dracula Untold is no longer part of their shared universe.

I actually like Dracula Untold and hoped it was part of this shared universe. But after looking at this preview maybe it is better off not being part of this train wreck.
Glad to know I'm not the only one. I will give the Mummy reboot a chance. Even though my hopes are not high either.

I think I probably read that somewhere, as it sounds familiar. Either way, huzzah!

1999's reboot and its increasingly-awful sequels aside, the Mummy is first and foremost a horror franchise. And laughing at witty quips and slapstick moments really impairs one's ability to get properly fearful.
Even the greatest horror comedies are generally comedies first, horror second. The difference between Feast and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes isn't actually all that vast. How scary were the later entries in the Nightmare on Elm Street series? Comic relief is one thing, and I'm not at all sure it belongs in the trailer of what is meant to launch a series of films linked by horror (note also, however, that the godawful Dracula Untold had almost no comedy of any kind, despite the ludicrousness of many of the things that happened in the film, so no jokes does not equal "good" any more than too many equals "bad").
Moving away from a generally lighthearted and comedic tone is probably wise from the perspective of trying to make ago a shared horror universe and making it last more than one movie apiece.
As for Dracula Untold, my Goblin alias has said what I have to say on the subject of the film from a quality standpoint, and as far as what the character of Dracula is meant to be, well, it's sort of covered here. Glad to hear it's formally binned.

Also DU had killer tunes. I use it's soundtrack in my games from time to time. And Dracula's armor was cool.
But yeah, I would have loved to see something Penny Dreadful-style horror movie drappings in new Mummy movie too. But alas, they want to make easy money with no risk so it's pg13 action schlock. Or at least so it seems. I'm gonna probably see it since I'm a sucker for Cruise and Crowe both and again, that mummy chick looked badass.

One good thing about a Wolf Man reboot, it would more lend itself to straight up horror I think. Sure you'd have some action sequences as they battle the wolf, but unlike what we saw in this Mummy trailer, the wolf man doesn't really have the ability to cause mass destruction.
You'd think they wouldn't turn every monster story into some potential world ending epic.....you'd think.....

Shhhh....don't give them ideas. Next thing you know, Wolfman will have the power to control any kind of canine. Can you imagine the terror of a Chihuahua swarm?

Yeah, but why him? Jekyll is classically a chemist/philosopher sort. What has he got to offer on an eldritch archeological front involving the resurrection of the dead and a seemingly apocalyptically powerful undead princess?
Some iteration of Van Helsing, or a Frankenstein family member (since Frankenstein worked with the boundaries of life and death), or the fortune teller Maleva (or her descendants), or...
Jekyll is just an insanely nonsensical fit.

Yeah, the inclusion of Jekyll/Hyde still has me scratching my head. It's not like he was a staple of the old Universal monster shared universe of movies from back in the day.
The only Universal movie I can recall him from is Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. That wasn't so much part of their old shared universe as just a series for Abbott and Costello.
