Reskinning Animal Companions

Would there be any issue with me reskinning my animal companion to be something similar but different (esp if what I'm making it look like is also a valid AC option)?

Specifically I want to reskin my wolf to be a bigger Hyena.

You cannot skin an animal companion into something that exists, hyena is a legal animal companion.

[biologist rules lawyer]You could be a civet Hyena, AKA an aardwolf... ? [/biologist rules lawyer]

Just get an actual Hyena.

Relevant FAQ is relevant.

Hyenas are more closely related to felines, anyways.

If you feel uncomfortable in the body you were born with, and the label that society has given you, then I support your transition into BigNorseHyena.

Well if the vikings could import Antonio Banderas for a fight..

That was a classic example of a reverse horn of Valhalla. Instead of summoning barbarians to your aid, it summons you to barbarians aid.

Ulfric, these giant spiders are beating us bad! Use your Horn of Adventuring! Summon the swashbuckler!

Hmmm... what about the animals that exist but don't have companion stats? The Emperor Cobra for example. Can my venomous snake just be a smaller cobra? Or a really big rattlesnake? Or a giant miniature space asp?

I think as long as it's still clearly a venomous snake to any observers and to the rules you could call it any venomous snake you wanted. The FAQ would be violated if you wanted it to appear to be something significantly different that could have real in-game implications or mislead characters in the game.

Sure. I believe the example given is that a Cat, Small could be flavored as a Bobcat, Linx, or Serval, so long as when people look at it they recognize it as a Cat, Small.

All I can say that if you attempt to skin an animal companion around here, you'll face the wrath of Flutter and her pointy, pointy stick.

Hmm

If Vivisectionist was allowed reskinning animals would be much easier

As others have replied, describing your animal companion as a member of the basic category is fine i.e. the small cat example.

Wolf is unequal to Hyena, so no reskinning.

Hi, Tonya! :) Sorry... gotta do it...

No feather-horses, the Tonya has decreed it so!

Ah, crashcanuck ... I gotta say, I like you, man. A man after my own heart it seems. I think our brains must totally be in sync. I mean, this post comes on the heals of your previous post causing me to make another with the same theme as yours, which then sparked Tonya's last decree (after the one right above, anyway). And it is almost exactly the same thing I had previously wanted to do.

But in summation, no. You cannot reskin a wolf into a large hyena any more than you can reskin an intelligent celestial horse that cannot be identified with Knowledge: Nature and instead is identified with Knowledge: Arcana due to being a Magical Beast rather than an Animal into a horse with a feathered mane. Sorry, that kinda roleplaying fluff is treading too heavily on shared mindscape that PFS is trying to create. ;)
