Spheres of Power, First Attempt

Advice and Rules Questions

I've been looking at Spheres of Power a lot recently and finally got around to making a character for it, but since I'm new to the system I wanted to double check and make sure I got everything right.

The idea for the character is I've had for a long time: a thief that learns runic magic, but hurts himself when using said magic. This is something hard to pull off(though A wilder with Warrior's Surge fits the bill), but pretty easy with SoP.

For your review, here is Gerald Antairus.

Everything looks like it checks out. Just be careful about using destructive blast. Most people I know who take the Draining Magic drawback focus in Spheres with Hours per Level duration such as Protection (Aegis) and Divination (Sense) talents. But as long as you are careful about it, you should be fine.

I am aware that Draining Magic and Destructive sphere could get very costly, more so than a kineticist and burn, but I'm okay with that.

Am I right in thinking that, if he had Invigorate on someone and that person was targeted by Dispel Magic the number for the enemy caster would be his Magic Skill Defense?

Sounds right to me.

Everything looks good to me. Solid job on the Tradition bud.

Yes, you are correct.

It's just Runist with one Somatic Casting replaced with Draining Magic. Hardest part was coming up with the tradition's name, but thank you all the same.

Oh yeah, I noticed that. The thing is you understood exactly what parts you wanted to replace to accomplish the idea you had.

My players just have no idea how to replicate the ideas they have using the rules, so I end up having to walk them through the whole process of selecting Drawbacks and Sphere Specific Drawbacks with the Boons or just straight bonus SP.

I guess it just makes me happy to see that people understand the system well enough to emulate what they want, nail all the fiddly bits in place, and come out the other end with a functioning Tradition.

Having made characters for World of Darkness and Mutants & Masterminds, fiddly parts are kinda easy to nail down. The fact they had Runist already made did most of the work too.

Liberty's Edge

Anytime I see the words 'draining casting' and 'destruction sphere' in the same sentence, I reflexively type 'energy sphere'. Getting a duration that lasts the whole combat (provided enemies aren't too spread out or fast) is much easier on the HP.
