Smart Animals -- INT higher than 2

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Bestiary entry on animals reads: "no creature with an Intelligence score of 3 or higher can be an animal."

However, Animal Companions can have Intelligence raiser to 3 or higher and are still remain the animal.

Is this a copy error from 3.5? Are animals really restricted to INT of 1 or 2 in Pathfinder?

I remember there was a 3.5 rule that animals whose intelligence went 3 became a Magical Beast. Has that been dropped now?

Sovereign Court

it's been dropped as far as I know and they don't automatically become magical beast. Eye for talent , make a lot of smarter animals than two easily.

Animal companions are a special case. Possessing intelligence of greater than 2 does not change them into magical beast, but they are allowed to become more intelligent. They do not become sentient creatures, but rather extremely intelligent animals of their kind.

To my knowledge, this increase allows them to understand a language, but they must still be trained, and used with handle animal.

Can you take a take a giant eagle as an animal companion? (not to change the subject)

No, there aren't even stats for a giant eagle as an animal companion. The closest you could get is a Roc, and reflavor it as a Giant Eagle, keeping all the regular stats.

Ooooo cool! A roc? Thx! I wanted to fly on a bird. Another Q.....can you train a roc as a mount and how long would it take?

Keep in mind, only druids have access to the Roc. Classes like ranger, cavalier, paladin do not have access to the full list of animal companions.

*Actually, other classes like Hunter may have access to the full druid animal companion list, search your specific class for what companions are allowed.

Rules for training are covered under Handle Animal. Also please note that animal companions typically come with a certain number of tricks and training.

Also note, that if you if your class doesn't grant an animal companion this works much differently and you don't have one. You can buy a mount, but these function differently from animal companions.

They're trained like any other animal. Eggs cost 4,000 gp. Upkeep costs would have to be worked out with your GM.

I believe it's standard for a starting animal companion to already know its 1st level allotment of tricks, which allows them to be trained as a combat mount (though a medium druid would not be able to ride the roc until level 7 when it becomes large).

Otherwise:

Combat Training (DC 20) An animal trained to bear a rider into combat knows the tricks attack, come, defend, down, guard, and heel. Training an animal for combat riding takes 6 weeks. You may also “upgrade” an animal trained for riding to one trained for combat by spending 3 weeks and making a successful DC 20 Handle Animal check. The new general purpose and tricks completely replace the animal's previous purpose and any tricks it once knew.

We're talking about animal companions. You don't have to pay for animal companions, at least not normally.

And the rules for normal mounts versus animal companions are very different. It's really important to nail down if were talking about normal mounts that are purchased or animal companions.
