I assume a move action. Does it provoke AoO or not?

A move action which provokes an AoO. See the actions in combat table on the legacy prd.

Reach and Objects: Can you pick up or manipulate an object in a square within your reach? Does this provoke an AOO? Does it provoke even if the foe can reach the object, but not your space?

The rules are a little hazy here, but to put it simply, you can affect objects and creatures within your reach. When picking up or manipulating objects, you generally provoke an attack of opportunity, but only against foes that can reach your space. You do not provoke attacks of opportunity from foes that cannot reach you, no matter what action you are taking, even if it includes reaching into a threatened space. Although it might seem realistic to allow an attack in such a case, it would make the game far too complicated.

As for the action type, it's a move action, per the Move Actions table in the Core Rulebook.

Free Action to drop an item in your square, Move Action to pick it up.

A Full Round is approximately 6 seconds.
Standard Actions are approx 4 seconds.
Move Actions are approx 2 seconds.
Free, Swift, and Immediate Actions are approx ~0.01 seconds.

Ehh. "Seconds" is fuzzy once you're below the full round level. Actions start to overlap and all that.

True, you can take multiple free actions in a round but I doubt a DM would let you take 15 free actions in the same round (which you presumably could if they are a 100th of a second). BTW, is there a "quick pick up" feat that lets you pick up a dropped item as a swift action and doesn't provoke AoO?

@blahpers that's why I say approximately.

@Yqatuba per RAW, there's no maximum amount of Free Actions that someone can take in a round, and yes I agree with you that a DM will cut you off after a certain amount and they're absolutely right to do so. Personally, I baseline a free action as yelling "Incoming!" So in approximately 6 seconds, I bet you could yell "Incoming!" about 8-12 times, so that's about where I'm going to cut a player off. This doesn't come up at my table though. Any player that is consistently using 4+ free actions in a round is obviously up to something, and our table doesn't look highly on abuse of the rules because it takes away from the fun of the other players.

Not exactly, but here are some things:

  • • The scavenger rogue talent lets you pick up and stow an item as a single swift action. (I don't know if it's available to unchained rogues, though.)
  • • The Cut Your Losses feat lets you pick up an item or even an unconscious ally as part of a withdraw action. (As always, note that you don't actually have to retreat to use this action.) Doesn't provoke.
  • • The Grab and Go feat lets you pick up an item as a free action as part of any movement. Doesn't provoke. If you have Throw Anything, you can pick up multiple items this way.

Scarab Sages

I actually just cast unseen servant early in the day and then give Jeeves a standing order to hand me any weapons people around me drop. (any within 30'). (please realize that I also often use a whip to disarm people

So, if I wanted anything picked up for me, I'd just tell Jeeves to get it. Unless I was needing to flirt with a target, or something like that.

That's what servants are for right? to fetch and carry and pick stuff up...

How do you get it to both follow you and fetch things for you without an extra command? Those are different tasks.
