Voss,
Hey now! Stretchy Marvel girl is awesome! :) But yeah, no Rogue appearances. We don't need em. I am hopeful for a nod to Kamala in the first movie if not an outright showcase of her in a possible second movie/sequel.
Well the first Captain Marvel is set during the 90's...Khan should have been even born yet if they are going to be faithful to her character in the comics.
(This makes me feel very old...)

I don't think Kamala will be in the movie that takes place in the 1990s, but what I like about Captain Marvel taking place IN the 90s it means there's time for her to establish some kind of a legacy (even if she hasn't been on Earth to fight for a bit)... so that in the present day, in perhaps Avengers 4 or Captain Marvel 2, it's reasonable for a teen Pakistani-American girl from New Jersey to be a fan of hers.
Incidentally, in case some folks are not aware, Kamala's fandom of Carol is why she's named "Ms. Marvel"--in Kamala's early inhuman transformation days when her transmogrification abilities were more fluid, she accidentally took the form of oldskool Ms Marvel because Carol was a favorite hero of hers--and then decided to stick with being named "Ms Marvel" as an homage to her hero, not because of her powerset. Carol later gave Kamala her blessing (although they had a falling out in Civil War II, though I do my best pretending that storyline never happened).
I agree upthread, I do not want X-Men folded into the MCU (Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch crossing over notwithstanding). I'd rather they stay separate universes and tell their own stories, especially because both are already so complex and carry their own themes. As much as I DO like at least several aspects of the Rogue vs Carol Danvers story, especially from Rogue's POV, dealing with Carol's psyche in her mind, I have seen that story told a couple times (comics and cartoon) and I have no need to see it retold. I'd also like a version of Carol where she doesn't have to spend several years in a coma.
I am psyched about Rambeau/Spectrum possibly being cast.

I am indifferent to whether the xmen join the mcu or not...as long as they keep up the current stuff Fox has been doing with more mature or genre bending stories.
I would like to get an actual cool Rogue though...I don't think the character has been well served in the comics. Is it too much to ask for a super strong rogue punching out sentinels?

Wei Ji the Learner |

...it would put a LOT of the comments that Fury made into an entirely *different* light if one looked at say, a '90's Captain Marvel and then IM/IM2/IM3 (not to mention other appearances like the Avengers, etc.)
It's one thing to know about a thing existing... it's another entirely to *live* through something existing that no one else should know about (picture shades of M.I.B. here)

Yeah the civil war 2 story kind of made me not like carol. It wasn't entirely bad but the heroes need to learn by now to stop fighting each other.

I'm really hoping that they keep the Rogue thing out of it, if only because I don't want the X-Men in the MCU in general.
I don't particularly either, as adding mutants to the MCU seems too much like 'kitchen sinking' and would clutter up the landscape horribly. (There is a reason House of M and various attempts to 'de-clutter' happened) I'd rather see a separate X-verse.
But I can totally see Disney doing it anyway, and it is how Carol wanders out of the Marvel role and into something else.

Yeah, with this movie set in the 90s (or at least most of it in the 90s), it'd be too early for Kamala to even cameo in it, unless they jump to Carol on Earth in the present day like they did in the first Captain America.
Still, since Larson was confirmed on set shooting scenes for the fourth Avengers movie, it's possible that Kamala could cameo in that movie. And since Spider-Man will be in the film, maybe Kamala and Miles Morales might both cameo. (I know, I know, I'm getting way ahead of myself here...)

I'm not sure that "practically always having a drink in his hand" is really toning down the alcohol problem. Just means he hasn't hit the bottom yet.
Honestly, I'm not sure how you'd do that kind of story in mnovies. You'd want to build up to it. You'd want to have him established with a solid reputation for heroism and a lot of respect and responsibility. You can't start him out with the obvious problem, since the whole audience reaction would just be "get the destructive super suit away from him".
I'd say they're roughly around the point where they could do it in an Iron Man 4, if they were going to make one.

I was going to be grumpy about all the X-Men chatter cluttering up this Captain Marvel thread, but then I read this:
‘Black Widow': Blacklist Alum Jac Schaeffer to Write Marvel Movie
Yep, Natasha Romanoff is finally getting her own movie!
!!!

"an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap."
I want to be super excited about this, but until we get named and/or otherwise verifiable sources, I will remain skeptical. These are also the kind of sources that said Cap died at the end of the Civil War movie, when he obviously didn't.
Once confirmed I will be dancing all over town.
And Dottie better be in it. ((Please do not disabuse DeathQuaker of her unlikely notions, she is fragile.))
What was this Carol person we were talking about?

Carol Danvers
I was joking. :)
I loved Kelly DeConnick's run(s) on her title. Sadly (speaking of Dottie) Fazekas and Butters' wasn't as good. I found it hard to follow.
I got very stoked at recent pics of the various MCU film women together, with Brie Larson in them. Fits right in.

The furor over Monica seems to have died down re: captain marvel. I know she wasnt a super popular character, but then again, neither was Carol(I was i introduced her as part of Rogue and that was all I knew of her for a very long time, and then as Binary and then she kinda disappeared). I do hope they fold Monica into the mythos.
Has she worked with Kamala at all?

Monica or Carol?
I don't think Monica has. Kamala and Carol were close for awhile, starting with Kamala's being a huge fan before she got powers. Less so since Civil War 2.Carol apparently became a much bigger name character at some point in the last decade or so while I wasn't paying much attention.

Are there any "must read" Captain Marvel stories that I should check out? I'm sorry to say that my only real comic exposure to her was in Civil War II... which did not leave a very good impression on me.
I avoided much of Civil War II, and I understand Civil War II did for Carol what Civil War I did for Iron Man... e.g., shoehorn a bunch of ridiculous stuff in the plot to make her act completely out of character.
I recommend Kelly DeConnick's 2014-15 series. They come in 3 tradepaperbacks ("Higher, Further, Faster, More" is the first one).

First images of Larson in Captain Marvel suit, complete with 90s hair. It's possible the red parts of the suit will be CGIed in later. Edit: Or maybe the all blue is an homage to Mar-Vell's original color scheme.

I suspect the second is more likely. Maybe an early version of her look and she'll switch to the red and blue in the movie.

Gemma Chan (Humans, Fantastic Beasts) joins the cast as...

DeathQuaker (and anyone else interested) as I'm not sure where else I can post this that you might see it with the boards still in flux:
Marvel is (re-)launching a new Exiles comic with the Tessa Thompson version of Valkyrie and an older Kamala Khan as regular members. And issue #3 features Peggy Carter as Captain America (I'm not how that works with her being British, but I'm not complaining).

Negachaotic Teenage Slaadhead |

Marvel Studios announced today that production has officially started on Captain Marvel. Also in the announcement was that Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, and Clark Gregg have been added to the cast (presumably reprising their previous MCU roles as Ronan the Accuser, Korath the Pursuer, and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson respectively).
Also, Lashana Lynch has been cast to replace the previously cast DeWanda Wise, who had to step down due to scheduling conflicts in filming. No word yet who Lynch will be, or Wise would have been, portraying. (Please? Pretty please?)

Monica?
Monica Rambeau, the second of the half-dozen people to call themselves Captain Marvel, former leader of the Avengers, former leader of Nextwave, totally underutilized but awesome character with a fairly unique powerset, compared to the average Captain Marvel.
Also going for some sort of Ripley's record as to how many codenames she's used (Captain Marvel, Photon, Spectrum, Pulsar?), although she's got her work cut out for her just keeping up with Hank Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Yellowjacket/Wasp Pym. :)

Has Hank really called himself Wasp? That would have been weird. He was just "Dr. Pym" for awhile though.
And Carol's in the running as well - (Ms. Marvel, Binary, Warbird, Captain Marvel.)

Yeah, Janet was (believed to be) dead at the time, and he wanted to honor her memory. Since 'Wasp' isn't a gendered name, like SuperMAN or Wonder WOMAN, there was nothing particularly weird about it, but others (like Hercules) still went so far as to suggest that it was a sign of his mental instability acting up, since, to Hercules, the idea of a man honoring a mere woman was cray-cray.

Not weird in gendered sense, just in the taking her name sense. May have made sense in context. (Also probably because I wasn't thinking she was dead at the time. :)
In the super-hero with most codenames contest, he was also Goliath for awhile early on.

The next phase of filming is now moving to New Orleans. Perhaps Lashana Lynch's currently unnamed role will be Monica Rambeau after all?
Ant-Man and The Wasp releases July 6th. Is it too much to hope we might get a Captain Marvel teaser trailer with it too?
