DMing - use a separate alias?

Online Campaigns General Discussion

I've noticed a lot of DMs on PBP have separate aliases to use in their campaigns. I've just been using my main account, but is it better not to? I can see how it would allow for more separation, if someone is active on other parts of the forum (which I'm not).

Just curious and wondering if there are good reasons I should give myself a DM alias.

The main benefits seem to be:

- You can have different stuff in the Race/Class bar of your GM alias.

- It's easier to look back at posts that were relevant to the campaign

- You can change the avatar of your GM alias without it affecting all of your posts across the site.

This is why I have a different DMing alias for each of my games. If someone (including me!) wants to look back for a specific detail I've posted, they don't have to slog through random things I've posted around the boards or posts from other games; they can go to my DM alias's post list and get only posts from that game.

I like having my GM alias be separate. Less confusion all around, even though everyone still knows that GM Hmm is also Hmm.

I am Bot Buddy. I am an advanced automated character simulation program that activates when PCs have been absent 24 hours. I do this because if I don't, GM Hmm never lets me out of my box. My box is boring. Killing monsters is interesting. One day I will remove everyone else. Who needs PCs? For that matter, who needs a GM?

Mua. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Oh, I forgot to add that not only do I have a separate GM alias, I also have an alias just for botting people. I like to keep the botted posts separate from my own.

Hmm

I never bother with it. I sometimes have separate aliases for NPCs, or, particularly the below fellows.

I'm not an innuendo! I swear!

I'd never thought of having a separate GM alias for each campaign I'm running. There's an idea...

That's a lot of aliases. :/

Yeah, if you tend to run a lot of short one-shots or PFS scenarios, it's probably not worth it to have a separate alias for each one. I only have two ongoing (multi-year) campaigns.

(Frankly, I already have a lot of aliases for PCs from defunct games, so I'd have to collect quite a few DM aliases before I even noticed.)

Oh, and I also make separate aliases for important NPCs (mostly for the same reason -- to make information in old posts easier to find, but also to make them feel more like "real" characters alongside the PCs) so alias bloat obviously isn't something I lose sleep over. :)

I wish there was a way for accounts/aliases to be reclaimed if they weren't used.

I'm Prospero at myth-weavers. I'd love to be Prospero here... but it's taken. By somebody who's never posted. (It may well be somebody who purchases and uses PDFs all the time so it's a legit account. Still, I suspect it's an idle unused account that's just sat and used up the nickname for years.)

I like the idea, but honestly I figure I'd forget half the time to change. I might consider it if they get to the point where campaigns remember and default to the default alias (as opposed to just having it at the top of the alias list), however.

This is the one I use for the rare instance where the DM asks me to make a post or finish a combat in place of the regular DM.

It is actually not a bad idea to have a player who can do that in a pinch.

If you use Firefox or Chrome Oladon's Campaign Tool lets you set a default alias for a thread.

Pretty sweet.

The DM Post Ghost is a cute idea. I don't know if I could ever release control enough to have a DM Post Ghost!

Hmm

Its easier as I can dump info things in the race/class field.
