Azatas as NPCs

Advice

I'm writing a campaign with a character who I would like to be a Bralani and another I'm thinking can be a Ghaele.

For these recurring NPCs would it be better to give the base creatures class levels or give the regular classes select special abilities, such as giving a ranger the whirlwind blast and wind form abilities, or a fighter the Ghaele gaze and some spell abilities?

When combining character classes and these creatures, how would you handle all the abilities, DR, immunities, and spell resistance azatas have? it seems a little crazy for a "regular" NPC to have ALL that.

I have no idea what CR you're going for, but here are the rules for adding classes to something with racial HD.

You can also place one of the simple class templates from Monster Codex on them.

Not really. Since, it's an NPC by default....

"Determining the final CR for a creature with class levels requires careful consideration. While adding a class level to a monster that stacks with its existing abilities and role generally adds 1 to its CR for each level taken, adding classes that do not stack is more complicated."

according to this rule if I wanted to give the Ghaele (a creature I can see fiting a combat OR spellcasting role) character 4 class level in fighter or cleric, that would increase it's CR from 13 to 17. However, if I wanted the final CR to be 14 I could probably reduce its HP by 50, AC by 5, etc etc, and then add class levels to bring the final CR up to 14 by adding the class levels as normal. Am I understanding the monster advancement table properly?

So if I wanted to reduce it's CR by 3 before adding class levels just add the young template three times and then add class levels?

That's hilariously insane. No, you apply the "Ranger" template to one and the "Fighter" template to the other.

The Bralani Ranger would get +2 to Dex rolls and AC, PBS as a bonus feat, Favored Enemy +4, and Track.
