Looking for someone to teach me ...

Advice

So as the subject states, I need someone to teach me. I have been playing Pathfinder/D&D with a group of friends. One of us has experience and is GMing the campaign on a custom storyline whilst the rest of us are playing and only have played for the few sessions our GM has hosted.

I am quite clueless and have a lot of questions to ask but all in all, I desire for a partner willing to teach me to at least an intermediate level of understanding and play.

For some background on my current campaign, I am a lv 6 cleric, I worship Osiris and somehow.. (I know this is irrational) revived twice from human to half-celestial to now Celestial Outsider.

All I ask here is for someone who's willing to sit down with me and teach me the ropes. I'd prefer a 3rd party IM communication but if you feel you can teach me here, please do. All information is greatly appreciated and I thank you heavily.

Believe it or not, this stuff isn't really all that hard - despite the size of the core book & the countless additional books available. And I bet you already have the basics down. After that it's just a process of adding more things....
VERY important: Do NOT add things from additional books until you're comfortable with the core rules.

But let's start at the top.
Do you:
Have a core rulebook of your own? If you don't, invest in one.
Understand how to generate your stats? Strength, Dex, etc....
Determine your stat modifiers?
Pick a race?
Pick a class?
Determine things like your AC, HP, & Saves?
How to level up?
If you're playing a spell caster, do you understand how to pick your spells, how to tell how many bonus spells you get, and how to cast them?

Do you understand the skill system?
Do you understand the feat system?

Do you understand the turn structure - how many & what types of actions you can take?
How to attack & how to determine damage dealt?

Other questions? Fire away....

Thank you very much for replying.

- No, I do not have a rulebook. Would you mind linking me to one?
- From what I've understood of stats, I'm using a site called d20 something... and she normally helps us with adding the stats. I'd like to do this on my own.
- Very slightly. I know the options but she's being very kind and kind of out of the rules allowing us to pick beasts. I would not like to do this but instead try and learn about the actual races.
- Once again, very slightly. This is my 3rd session altogether of playing and I very quickly picked a class (Cleric) based on what I'm used to in other games only to find a myriad of questions and confusion.
-If by HP you mean determining wounds and whatnot. I've got a basic understanding.
- No. She manages EXP but I'd like to learn this.

- No. I looked through the list up to 3rd level Cleric as instructed and picked a few spells. You'd probably cringe looking at my character sheet.

- Somewhat.
- Somewhat.
- A tiny bit. I know so far that it's one action per turn and I think highest initiative..
- Very little.

I would really like to discuss this on a 3rd party IM and I'm not sure if it's against the rules to ask for it but if not, I'd like to add someone on Skype to discuss. Please let me know.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Your game already seems to be well outside the norm of what most games and GMs would allow since you're a celestial outside at level 6, but ccs has a good start. Once you understand those basics you can start delving into the more 'complex' aspects of the game.

No seriously, take it from a GM; if all you understand about the game is the bare mechanics of how your class works, how the combat system works and how leveling works and show up with a genuine interest to play and learn every session, then you're already ahead of the curve and most people would be kicking in your door to have you at their table.

A couple of free resources to consider using are:

The Pathfinder Reference Document

A source reference document run by a 3rd party. D20pfsrd

Another Reference document run by a 3rd party. Archives of Nethys

The difference between the second two is that one has ads and the other does not, so some of the language differs between them. All of those websites are invaluable for players as they allow quick rules checks without having to carry around a library full of rules books.

EDIT: Links edited to make for easier reading with the explanations of 'My Self'.

The PRD is 100% correct, organized by book, and maintained by the Paizo staff. It contains all the major hardcover books, including the rules. The D20PFSRD is a third-party site run by multiple people, and is mostly correct, but omits setting-specific text for copyright reasons. It contains rules, classes, feats, etc., but does not contain Pathfinder deities, organizations, or other copyrighted material. It has a better search engine than the PRD, but also contains 3rd party material. The Archive of Nethys is run by a single guy, plus some volunteers, and contains classes, feats, equipment, etc., but does not contain the game rules. It does, however, have a good search engine and have setting-specific information, such as names of deities and whatnot.

Trust me... I am not even sure how I became a Celestial Outsider. My current GM is being extremely lenient to us because she realizes we're all playing this for the first time but I'd love to learn the traditional way to play.

Oh my god.. I really do have an addiction to this game outside of the unfair advantages we're given and it's really due to the storyline. I typically am finding myself very interested in this custom storyline so I can only imagine what other GMs have to offer. I have sat for 5 hour sessions at a time these past few consecutive days.

Thank you for the resources. I'm hoping these resources and a GM/Player willing to teach me would happen so that I may learn everything I can.

Could you link me the PRD? D20PFSRD is definitely the site I'm using.. that confusing name can identify easily.

EDIT: Oops, I know what the PRD is now. Ahaha... silly me.

PRD stands for Pathfinder Reference Document, it is the first of those three links.

Oops... LOL. I'll be reading them shortly.

Also here is a playlist of videos that seems to explain the game pretty well. Haven't watched them all the way through as they are long but after skimming them they seem solid. Try not to get overwhelmed and just stick with the first two videos to start out.

I'll try to watch this first before the links. Thank you very much.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16

I am willing to answer some questions via AIM, if you use that platform.

I think a lot of my questions have been answered but I still would love to have a companion to ask questions along my experience with D&D. If you manage to have a Skype, I would love to add you. If not, I can always get AIM.

Gee, Top 16 RPG Superstar. What a feat!

You want to be taught... Go the road most of us have... Learn by doing. You have a GM... He'll be your guide on your road to self-knowledge.

No problem, I'll PM you my Skype name.

Haha, that was mostly blind, dumb luck.

I can't really offer anything that anybody else hasn't already said, but I can offer some encouragement: I'm pretty new to D&D myself, I've only been playing about a year and half and I just started Pathfinder so I'm new to the system too.

We all had questions the first few times we played. I know I didn't really understand the rules for the first couple of weeks. Heck, a couple of sessions in I still had to ask which dice to roll for damage. But that's all right. I'm GMing for the first time now and I can promise you that you will pick up the rules quickly. Read the books. Watch the other players. Watch your GM as much as you can. You'll learn most of what you need to know just by doing it and watching others do it.

Good luck!
