Use Command to make them approach/flee through the shards, use Reverse Gravity to make them fall upward through it, etc.

Make a pit. Then fill it with etheric shards.

can you layer them? Or can you not because it is "considered a magical trap" ?

because that would be a hell of a mean trick to layer them on a camp and then just start pelting firballs.
Well even without layering that works well.

Moderate necro to note in this appropriate place that you can combine Etheric Shards with Toppling Spell to force a trip check for every square they move through. Yikes.
