It says 'regains additional hit points equal to 2+ the spells level.'

Is it talking about the spells actual level or the spell slot used?

Cure wounds is 1st, prayer of healing is 2nd, mass cure wounds is 3rd, etc or cure wounds cast at 3rd lv?

Is what I'm asking clear enough or should I explain more?


It's clear. I had the same puzzle. We eventually concluded it was ambiguous and went with spell level (ie cure wounds is always +2). We figured they're pretty good about explicitly using 'spell slot' when that's what they mean.

1. A first level spell would be +3 (level +2), and

2. I have the opposite interpretation. Note The same wording is used in the dispel magic spell.

Read the paragraph on page 201 about casting spells at a higher level it seems that if you use a 3rd level spell to cast cure wounds you have just cast a 3rd level spell.


Oh yeah, I meant +3.


That page 201 reference Werecorpse gave is pretty explicit - if you cast a first level spell using a second level spell slot, it "becomes a second level spell for that casting".

So cure wounds cast with a third level spell slot would be 2+3 bonus hp healed.

Heh. Given Werecorpse's post, we've now changed out interpretation. :p

That section on page 201 seems pretty clear to me that using a higher level spell slot to cast a cure wounds spell increases the level of the spell for that casting.

I must admit I like that interpretation better. I played a life domain cleric for a while and it seems like a pretty pathetic bonus eventually if it doesn't scale with spell slot.

I mean we do spell slot level + 2. My Life Cleric has Wisdom 18 (+4)

Cure Light Wounds does 1d8+7, 2d8+8, 3d8+9, 4d8+10, 5d8+11, or 6d8+12.
Heal does 70+8.
