Closing a location with oloch.

oloch can discard armor instead of burying it. How does this work when required to bury a card to close a location? If oloch chooses to bury an armor to close, can he use his power to discard it instead? If so will the location be closed or open?

Yes, you can use his power to discard it instead. However...

The location will still be open. The requirement is that you bury a card. If no cards are buried, then you didn't fulfill the requirement and the location does not close.

Why would you want to ever do this then? Say you checked the power feat that lets you recharge instead of discard and you have a bunch of armors clogging up your hand, none of which have the ability to recharge when you reset your hand. Someone at another character encounters a villain, so you go to temporarily close your location and recharge an armor due to your power. The location is not temporarily closed so the villain can escape there, but you got rid of one of those armors without taking any damage! Not a likely scenario to be sure, but hey :)

I don't have Oloch in front of me, but based on other similar powers I would think his power should work as "When YOU PLAY an armor and would bury it, you can discard it instead".

Burying the armor to close a location IS NOT playing it, and therefore Oloch's power wouldn't kick in.

Sovereign Court

I don't have the link or the time this morning to find it, but I'm 99% certain it was confirmed a while a back that Oloch's power is actually a rare exception that does not require playing it.

Oloch's power does not require him to play the cards being buried. It simply states "When you would bury an armor or weapon, you may discard it instead."

If I don't qualify my post with "I don't have the card/character in front of me" that usually means I actually went and checked the card/character before posting to get the exact wording of whatever-it-is. There are no FAQs regarding Oloch, meaning the power works as-written on the card.

I concede.

It seems strange though, as it goes a bit against the perceived *spirit* of the Damiel and Forger Merisiel FAQs. And in PACG, sometimes I'm unsure if a power just goes against the grain, or it just hasn't been FAQed in time.

Yes, Oloch's power does seem unusual in that regard as usually you do need to play the card to get that benefit. However, Oloch was released in Skull & Shackles, so if it hasn't been FAQed yet, it seems unlikely that it will be. There is also a post confirming that it works that way, as Andrew hinted at.
