Ok. It's much much better then I thought. Thank you all for telling me to watch it.
Cmdr. Sinclair is a badass. So is Garibaldi :D
When you realize what Michael O'Hare was going though during that year he was on the show, it makes the performance that much more awesome.
And it shows just how great a human being J.M. Stracyzinski is.

Love my DVD set, but I'd also love to see them finally put the series on Bluray.
Sadly will never likely happen. The CGI would fall apart under high-def, as it wasn't designed for that.
If they are released, it will likely just be DVD quality on Blu-ray discs. But, hey, more episodes per disc I guess.

That, and I don't think JMS actually sees any money from it. Basically, if there is a fire at a set tomorrow, they can charge it to B5 profits for purposes of sticking it to JMS's share.

Great show. I'm going to have to break out the box sets again.
"Not Drazi. Purple!"
"I've have always been here."
"It's like being pecked to death by cats".
"Woo. Hoo?"
"It's like all those full moons sending out bozo-rays."
This little lapse in security isn't going to affect my Christmas bonus is it?"
Cheers

That's the thing that baffles me on some of the shows. I suppose it ultimately boils down to money.
If you kept it at DVD quality, but put it to Blu-Ray, in theory you could fit an entire season worth of a TV show on one Blu-Ray.
Less Space taken up and everything else.

A few years back my gaming group ran a B5 rpg campaign, and the GM put us in the middle of the Green-or-Purple clash. By chance, two of us were wearing green shirts that day, and the GM's girlfriend (who annoyed many of us by her constant 'I am only with the group, not part of it crap') was wearing purple. Also by chance, we were sitting on either side of her (the Drazi bit wasn't mentioned until after), and we both put on our best axe-crazy grins, pointed at our shirts, then hers.
"Green."
"Purple."
Her freakout was worth it....

It's my favourite scifi show also. If you enjoy deep characters in such a setting, you might also like Farscape - it pales in comparison, but is still a good show on its own, with interesting characters and an unsual setting for the protagonists.
I always thought that B5 and Farscape were both in their own ways reactions to Star Trek TNG. B5, with its big series wide plot arcs and character development. Farscape, by giving us a starship crew that was completely and utterly dysfunctional.

Well, she started out as just a fellow gamer, then started dating the guy (who rotated as a GM in those days). Her 'I want to turn the game into a solo adventure for....ME!' crap got much, much worse a couple of years after they started dating).
The real fun part in that game (for me, anyways) was that the GM allowed me to play a techno-mage, and I spent a lot of time re-hijacking the plot away from her.

THE CGI could be redone to look better. They were repeating almost all of the shots anyway.

Babylon 5 was the most awesome TV science fiction show I have ever seen (even though I didn't get to see the last part of Season 5. Too bad it got basically swept under the rug -- seems like many major powers in the media business world really had it in for Babylon 5.
When you look at the mortality rate from the show, including the travails and death of Michael O'Hare, and other cast members, you have to conclude that the Universe itself had it in for B5.
Fun fact: J.M. Straczynski was once mugged in San Diego. In revenge, the city was blown up by terrorits in B5's setting.

Well, JMS burned a lot of bridges by claiming DS9 ripped off B5. There are a lot of similarities between the shows, and I like them both. I don't think Paramount stole the idea, I am pretty sure they had DS9 in development when JMS pitched the idea to them. But there were a lot of people in the industry that were against the show because of that.

As a Battlestar Galactica ans sci—fi fan, i was always intrigued by B5 but never really took the time to watch it. That was untill 2 years ago, when a friend of mine insisted me SO MUCH to see at least the first episodes that i gave it a shot.
Today, it remains the ONLY series in which i have ever cried. Seriously, the last episode was a freeking ninjas—chopping—onnions fest.
Lando and G'Kar are by far the BEST characters , their relationship grows at an amazing rate and you manage to love/hate them at the same time, in several ocassions.
In Valen's name!

What bridges did he "burn off" by doing so? It amounted to nothing more than the usual trash talk between competitors.
What people in "the industry" think of the show is irrelevant... it's the RATINGS that matter. What B5 didn't have is the wish-fulfillment technobabble that Trek shows use for fuel. DS9 itself was so boring a place, that they went to the ridiculous length of anchoring a starship to it so that Sisko and crew could go on field trips. No wonder Jake hated the idea of living there.
Biggest difference between the two... Babylon 5 was a city in space, considered the last best hope for peace where the presence of a war hero was needed. Whereas DS9 was clearly a punishment posting for an officer who had lost out in StarFleet's political game, presumably by making his hatred for Jean-luc Picard a little too obvious.

Babylon 5 always got moved to god awful time slots in my area.
I think there was a stretch where it came on at 4:00 in the morning on Sundays, so it pretty had to be taped to be watched. (Though now that I think about it, we had a bunch of Sci-Fi shows that didn't air until after midnight.)
(And I can also remember the Fox station with it running an ad highlighting all of their Sci-Fi shows. The first time the ad ran it included B5. The second time it ran later that week, B5 was conspicuously absent. B5 was still on the station, but the station would not advertise it.)
My parents and I loved the show, but man. Our local station sure as hell didn't.
And as for quotes:
"I got better."

Babylon 5 wasn't designed to appeal to the average sci-fi fan. It had a notable absence of cat suits, and a relatively low level of ship blowing explosions per episode. Nor was the future full of wish granting devices or other magic. In other words, it had nothing for the average Star Trek fan.

Plenty of magic and mysticism - from the Minbari rituals to the First Ones to psychic powers. No "wish granting machines", I suppose.
The human tech level was lower than Star Trek and the general feel was grittier, if that's what you're talking about.
And, in the later seasons, plenty of ships blowing up.

right... no conjuring Earl Grey Tea at the lowliest ensign's merest whim.
No conjuring copies of women in the holodeck for..... well we'll let Riker, Barclay, and LeForge explain the rest.

Yes. They didn't have replicators. Or a holodeck.
Or transporters either, since I know those bother you as well. That makes it much less magical and much closer to hard science. Despite everything else in the other direction.
As I said originally: "The human tech level was lower than Star Trek and the general feel was grittier, if that's what you're talking about."
But there was plenty of magic. More than Trek in some ways.

Do the mass to energy conversion of a single human body mass and it should bother you as well. Especially when it makes whole copies of humans from NOTHING.

It's fiction. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.
Star Trek has transporters because they couldn't afford to shoot shuttle scenes all the time.LazarX |

Actually the problem was they could not get the Gailileo model done in time. (the small one that would later be used in motion shots) So they threw together a crappy effect used for "The Cage", and improved it later on after the second pilot was confirmed as a series.
