So in my RotRL game the group encountered some ghasts.
They got stuck in a 1x1 ramp and the druid had her wolf charge the ghasts. Who in tern paralyzed it, and then proceeded to coup de gras it.
It had missed both of its saves. First against the ghoul fever and then the paralysis.
My question is, and maybe it's more story than rules, but will it come back to life( I know the rules state after the next midnight - or somesuch it will). The party hasn't done anything yet, and the druid is taking this IRL and In Character pretty hard.
I had already, in game, hinted that her companion was not all he seemed. I was going to do a side arc about how her animal companion was a cursed nobleman.
Regardless, is it too much of a dick move to have her "haunted" or hunted by her now undead animal companion?
And at a glance I couldn't find where she could summon(and how long it would take) a new companion. Or if there were rules delegating this. I know a druid can dismiss a companion and summon a new one, would I treat this the same way?

What level is your party? I remember seeing a spell somewhere specifically for reviving dead animal companions, but I don't remember the name or which book it's in. It may be too high a level spell anyways.
If worst comes to worst, you can always pay someone to revive it. I remember someone "smartly" had a horse in Rise of the Runelords, that poor horse died five times to goblin fire. We ended up having to buy it fireproof barding just to get past all the goblins!

" If a druid releases her companion from service, she may gain a new one by performing a ceremony requiring 24 uninterrupted hours of prayer in the environment where the new companion typically lives. This ceremony can also replace an animal companion that has perished."
Also. only Humanoids can become ghasts as per this entry here
"A humanoid who dies of ghoul fever rises as a ghoul at the next midnight. A humanoid who becomes a ghoul in this way retains none of the abilities it possessed in life. It is not under the control of any other ghouls, but it hungers for the flesh of the living and behaves like a normal ghoul in all respects. A humanoid of 4 Hit Dice or more rises as a ghast."
So you can either be kind and say she finds an item to revive it, or she has to find someone else to revive it. OR if you were going to do a cursed nobleman story, then allow regular resurrection to raise it and emphasize that this shouldnt be possible. starting your quest to find out what it really is.

The animal companion is dead. It takes one day to summon a new animal companion. The new animal companion only has the bonus tricks from being a animal companion. It takes one weak to teach each new trick the druid wants it to have. Up to it's maximum of 3 per point of Int plus bonuses. As a group it is much easier to lose a animal companion then a player.
As a campaign tool yes you could have the wolf haunt her. However unless it's for a campaign tool. It will cause more problems then you want to deal with. More the point it might get that player to drop from the game. If she is taking it as hard as you say.

Here's what I see about Ghoul Fever:
Disease (Su) Ghoul Fever: Bite—injury; save Fort DC 13; onset 1 day; frequency 1/day; effect 1d3 Con and 1d3 Dex damage; cure 2 consecutive saves. The save DC is Charisma-based. A humanoid who dies of ghoul fever rises as a ghoul at the next midnight. A humanoid who becomes a ghoul in this way retains none of the abilities it possessed in life. It is not under the control of any other ghouls, but it hungers for the flesh of the living and behaves like a normal ghoul in all respects. A humanoid of 4 Hit Dice or more rises as a ghast.
Since the Animal Companion is not a humanoid, they would not rise as a ghoul/ghast at the next midnight. So then you are dealing with a dead wolf which I imagine can be resurrected for enough gold. However, while it may be emotionally difficult to lose that animal buddy, it may be easier and cost effective to search the wilds for a new wolf to tame.
