Musings on running my children on 5th edition

4th Edition

Sovereign Court

Hey everyone,

I thought that this was relevant, so I have here a blog post about running my kids on 5th edition. It may be old hat by now, but we've had a blast with it. We went from Pathfinder to 5th, and the transition could not have been smoother or more successful. I'd say more, but the blog says it all.

Do any of you run campaigns for your children?

Running a campaign with my son and one of his friend.

At age 11, they start to be able to synergyse their abilities and use basic strategies. While the maths of 3e/Pathfinder were not above their grade level, all those perksy +1 here and -2 there were dragging things down. 5e fixes that.

It definitely does. There is great glee at being able to roll with advantage, though it was a tougher to introduce the disadvantage mechanic.

Monsters are easier to run in 5e, but I find that encounters were easier to gauge in Pathfinder. My players either dance through the encounter or I have to deus ex machina what would otherwise be a TPK. There's only two of them however, this makes things more swingy...

I have three players, and it can get a little iffy at times. I know that there are some maths that help with the differences, being that everything is finely balanced for a party of four, but I guess it falls into the art/science of being a DM.

The 5e CR system seems definite at lower levels to me. A CR 1 encounter is a serious encounter for a 1st level party.

When it comes to PF, CR 1 encounter for a 1st level party is a walk over. It is when you get to +1 or +2 that you have to be careful. You may just have to make sure you run 4 characters total, even if you have NPCs, and judge the CRs as lower in 5e.

I was thinking of that, and/or allowing the beastmaster Ranger to use its pet as an independent character (with a few more hp).

Maybe grant the animal companion extra hit points through an ability similar to the abjurer's arcane ward ability?
