Occult Adventures playtest character "Retraining"?

Ok, so lets start at the beginning eh? started a character for the playtest, got the boon to keep playing it between the end of the playtest until the release of the book. Now I'm looking at a level 8 Kineticist with only 17 PP to spend and the additional resource page is saying that to update the character I need to retrain into the class.

Now I may be missing something but is this character now worthless because I don't have the Huge amount of PP to spend? The math that I'm seeing is 8 class levels * 5pp(assuming that the Playtest has synergy with the Book Class if not that would be 7PP)

You get to free retrain when the book came out, since the differences between playtest and published versions can fundamentally change characters. (No need to even stay kineticist, though I'd bet you will). Only things that can't change IIRC are spent PP and gold spent on consumed consumables. There should be rules somewhere, but I'm posting mobile. (Certainly, double check me I could be confusing the playtest rebuild rules with the rebuild boon rules)

"All playtest versions of the six new base classes from this book are no longer legal for play as of 7/29/15. Anyone playing the playtest version of one of the six new base classes must have updated his or her character as of 7/29/15. Updating the character means retraining any levels in that occult class, adjusting any class features, taking class-appropriate archetypes, and reassigning any skill ranks, feats, traits, or favored class bonuses. As part of the retraining process, such a PC may also sell back any equipment that does not use charges at its full market price (or the price she paid, whichever is lower)."

In other words it looks like the only things you can't change are race and stats I think. Though there might be a case for changing stats with the section from the guide under Playtests and Errata.

"If an ability-score-dependent feature of a class, prestige class, or archetype is altered: You may rebuild your character to its current XP. Keep the same equipment, but you can resell any equipment that augments the changed ability score at its full market price."

Sadly those are "rebuild rules", not "retrain rules" and there are those in my groop that would use that to declair it not a leagle character. And I can't find anything that talks about a free rebuild after first level...

Well, KageCM quoted the applicable rules for updating a playtest character to the published version. Declaring it legal or not, this is correct. He included the correct sources for you, I'd suggest printing out the relevant quotes and bringing them with you. (Also, sorry for my incorrect answer)

You update the character at no cost, using the minimal amount of changes required to make it legal under the final printed rules. The rebuild rules only come into play if the changes to the class meet the standards listed in the Playtests and Errata section quoted above. You do not have to pay prestige to make your character legal unless you want to actually retrain options that are not affected by the developmental changes.

Specific exceptions ALWAYS override the general rules.

The specific rebuild rules for Occult Playtest characters override the normal retraining rules. Simple as that.

This is an official exception to the regular retraining rules.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Talking with a member of Campaign Leadership during GenCon I found out you could even change your race if you wanted. Stats, feats, skills, class features (Wild Talents, in this case), gear, you name it. The only limitations were consumed items, partially charged items, and items acquired with Prestige.

It's one of the most comprehensive rebuild options ever offered.
