How to get the most out of Soulbolts

Advice and Rules Questions

I have some questions on how to optimize the Soulbolt.

It never occurred to me before but, does the emulated weapon for the Blade Skill "Emulated Ranged Weapon" need the following to properly fire the mind bolt?

For Emulated bows and Cross bows: Does the user still have to draw the bow?

For Cross bows: Do they have the action penalties to reload it to fire another shot?

Other wise at higher levels with multiple shots and feats like rapid shot, Soulbolts ranged attacks seems to function like semi automatic rifle with the mind bolt just appearing in/at/on the weapon.

I have some questions on how to optimize the Soulbolt.

1) Emulate Ranged Weapon blade skill: It says you can emulate one ranged weapon. Now I assume that the weapon emulated is one of appropriate size to the user (a one handed or two handed ranged weapon). Is there a way to emulate two ranged weapons, say a pair of Light Cross-bows or Hand Cross-bows?

2) Emulate Ranged Weapon blade skill (Bows/X-bows), Focused Offense blade skill and Focus Shot feat.Do these stack.
Ex: Emulate (Light Cross-bow) 1d8 + Int Mod + Wis mod + etc = X

3) Double Shot blade skill: It says that as a standard action use Psychic Strike to make two ranged attacks, but fore go the extra damage. Do both attacks have to be at the same target? If used as part of a full attack action, does each attack get the extra attack?
Ex: Rapid Shot as full action with Double Shot = four ranged attacks

4) Can you use Psychic Strike and Psionic Shot together in the same attack roll; with multiple attacks can you use Psychic Strike on one shot and Psionic Shot on the other?

5) Double Shot blade skill and Psionic Shot feat: does the extra damage for Psionic Shot apply to both, therefore also apply to question 3?

I believe from other threads, emulate weapon means, it is that weapon for intents and purposes. For good or bad.

1) Did a quick look on d20pfsrd, not that I could find. Which makes sense, as just about all ranged weapons require 2 hands to get the most out of. You need a hand to reload.

2) Focused Offense Blade skill won't work with crossbows, you don't add strength, so it doesn't get replaced. Other than that, the stat spread necessary and the requirement of using a std action makes it less than useful.

3) Nothing says they need to be at the same target. As a std action you can't combine it with a full attack action. It is either one or the other barring some special outside rules.

4) You choose to activate Psychic Strike when you hit, Psionic Shot is activated when you make the attack roll (expend your focus). You could use both on one attack, or use one or the other.

5) No, you decide to expend your focus when you make the first roll. Once that is resolved, you continue on to your second roll. Unless you have 2 focus, you wouldn't be able to expend it again.

Do you need to provide ammunition if you emulate a bow/crossbow?

It looks like. Emulate ranged weapon just provides the weapon.

Liberty's Edge

Bummer.

Any thoughts on why they added the line about weapon finesse to the Soulbolt?

Quote:
The soulbolt can use feats such as Weapon Finesse that work on light weapons with her mind bolt, but such feats only work on mind bolts in a light weapon form, such as using the Mind Daggers blade skill.

You mean that? Seems pretty self explanatory, what is tripping you up?

As to it being a bummer, archery is considered a strong combat style and having a free bow/crossbow that scales up as you level is pretty nice. It allows you to buy utility ammo which stacks with the weapon bonuses and abilities.

Liberty's Edge

It seems obvious is all, so I thought I was missing something that would explain the need for it to be included.

When you walk around without a weapon or ammo no one suspects what you're capable of until it's too late.

Do the energy blade skills still work when firing mundane ammo?

D20pfsrd:Magic Weapons

Liberty's Edge

I'm not sure how that's relevant as a blade skill is neither an enhancement bonus or a special ability marked with an annotation or an ammunition specific special ability.

Using emulate ranged weapon, your soulbolt is now a ranged weapon of a specific type.

Liberty's Edge

There are two things that alter mundane ammunition on that page. There are magic enhancements that bestow their properties onto their ammunition. And Ammunition specific enhancements. Basic stuff.

But a BLADE SKILL is not either of these things. So again how is that relevant?

If we are talking about ammunition, we are working under the premise that the emulate ranged weapon blade skill is being used. If that is the case, your soulbolt is now a ranged weapon, not a soulbolt correct? If it is a ranged weapon for all intents and purposes (like the blade skill says it is if you read it), it now operates like a ranged weapon.

It is relevant due to the choices made and if you read the relevant material, you get an answer to your question.

Liberty's Edge

I read the material before I asked. And a few times after.

Since the blade skill, Freezing Bolt, and by extension Psychic Stike are NOT magic weapon special abilities that leaves us with...

Ranged Weapons & Ammunition wrote:
The enhancement bonus from a ranged weapon does not stack with the enhancement bonus from ammunition. Only the higher of the two enhancement bonuses applies. Ammunition fired from a projectile weapon with an enhancement bonus of +1 or higher is treated as a magic weapon for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. Similarly, ammunition fired from a projectile weapon with an alignment gains the alignment of that projectile weapon.

Nothing about supernatural abilities here either. So the only logical answer is no it doesn't. Taking Emulate Ranged weapon requires you to produce your own ammunition, neuters your psychic strike and prevents you from overcoming damage reduction by dealing energy damage instead.

Now that strikes me as just a little odd, which is why I brought it up in the first place.

Well that would be why there are choices, so people can play the same class differently. Not all options will work with each other. If you are taking emulate ranged weapon you are doing it for a reason, and I would imagine you are covering your bases while doing so.

Thank you for giving me an example of an "energy blade skill" as I honestly had no clue what you were getting at with it.
