The 3.5 Pixie Nerf...

Advice

Dark Archive

Okay, so I played 2nd edition where pixies had polymorph.
I played 3rd edition where pixies had polymorph.
Then 3.5 in their zealous "omg we can't fix this broken polymorph, lets just get rid of it" many monsters including pixies lost the ability.

Now, Pathfinder is a copypasta of most of 3.5 (this isn't a dig on Pathfinder, I love Pathfinder) so they kept the 'nerf' of pixies.

So, as I am a fan of how pixies were back when I played freakin' 2nd edition...

I wanted to get some feedback from other players about returning that ability to them.

Options:

1. Give them back polymorph (self only) at will. Kind of powerful.
2. Give them Alter Self at will. Less powerful, but still gives them lots of forms to choose from.
3. Give them Alter Self and Beast Shape I but a limited number of times per day. This has the added benefit of kinda sorta fitting with the Pathfinder rules already, since you can add extra spell-like abilities to 1 in 10 pixies.

Anyone have feedback on these options, or have some other ideas... or do you think that taking away an ability that pixies had since at least 2nd edition (not sure about 1st edition) was totally correct by WotC?

If you're going to give them that kind of boost, you take them off of the Improved Familiar list.

Pixies had polymorph? Does not seem especially fitting. At least not for regular pixie. Some sort of more advanced fey maybe.

Did I miss something somewhere? I don't think they are on the Improved Familiar list.

I'm not talking about them as improved familiars, I am talking about them in general.

And yes, in 2nd and 3rd edition pixies had polymorph. It was fitting because they were tricksters... That squirrel watching you from the tree? Is it a squirrel, or is it a pixie about to turn back into an invisible pixie and shoot you with a sleep arrow?

A LOT of creatures with polymorph type abilities in 2nd and 3rd edition lost it in 3.5 when they couldn't get the polymorph rules working so they just tried to remove it entirely.

EDIT: Okay, just managed to look it up... in 2nd edition Pixies had it as one of their once per day spell like abilities... So still, it was removed completely in 3.5

But who doesn't want a Pixie Familiar for their Elven/Half-Elven Sword and Board Magus who seconds in Archery?

My My Half-elven Magus seconds in archery, but she's not sword and board. It's not really a great path if you're not a Skirnir magus.

And the reference is completely missed.

Yeah I missed it too... that said... I think actually what I'll do is just have my pixie invest in a Tattoo of Greater Disguise (since tattoos are treated as wondrous items then it's easy enough just to use wondrous items for effects)

I totally missed it as well.

If you had said "Who doesn't want it for their underage Human Rogue/Swashbuckler that grew up as a street urchin before befriending a Pixie and flying off to a magical land" it would have been more obvious.

Link...from the Legend of Zelda...cough cough

Oh really damn, now I really feel worse that I missed the reference...
