I need to build a pegasus-riding NPC

Advice

[reposted from another part of the boards because I fumbled it the first time]

I need to build a pegasus-riding 8th level NPC with some Mythic Ranks (like 1 or 2). He will be a major antagonist in an homebrewed Midgard (from Kobold Press) campaign.

He's a nobleman intending to seize power through military might and renown (and some nasty intrigues on the side).

Should I build him as a Fighter, a Cavalier or a Ranger with animal companion ?

He will need to be tough enough for the inevitable showdown between him (plus some minions) and the player characters ; the showdown should happen when they (the PCs) are 10th level.

Some ideas ? Ho, and the villain shall have a lance with lightning powers.
Come to think of it, the pegasus should probably be wicked - martially speaking - too.

This NPC should be able to go against a dragon and win (or survive, at the least).

For the Midgard savvy, he's a sworn foe of the Marothi Empire. Didn't Paizo publish some dragon-hunting sourcebook some time ago ?

I should add that I intend to give the Mounted Combat feat for free to PCs and NPCs alike.

The first priority is to have the pegasus be able to survive the first round of combat. If the main character is a fighter, the Pegaus should probably be built as a mythic creature in it's own right.

Here ya go...

Thanks for the info !

Note that for an NPC the pegasus doesn't have to be part of the wealth-by-level, or even a cohort from Leadership; it could be another NPC allied with the first. Give the thing a few extra HD, or some extra fighter levels, and some protective magical gear.

Scarab Sages

I would make the rider a hunter. The teamwork feats really make the hunter mount combo incredibly powerful, and the addition of skirmisher tricks, animal focus, and early access to ranger spells are gravy.

Particularly true because a Pegasus is a creature with average intelligence that can understand a language.

Leadership is a feat meant to give the player a limited form of the power that GMs have constantly and in an unlimited format. It is a mechanical sacrifice of resources in order to force an NPC into following your commands. But GM do not need to make that sacrifice, and they can just have their NPCs work together for whatever reasons at no expense.

There might be a need for an animal companion, if this wasn't a fully intelligent creature. You can use handle animal as a free action with an animal companion. But since the Pegasus is fully intelligent, then there is no need for that mechanic.

You can do that - however leadership lets you take this as your *bonded* mount - if you wish to use the nifty synergy that (say a Cavalier) gets with the bonded mount you should take leadership.

That being said - it's an NPC - feel free to break rules to make it a neat bad guy.
