Need A Lv. 1 Solo Make Up Encounter

Carrion Crown

Hello all, so, last game, one of the players valiantly told the rest of us to play since he had to work and it had been months since our last game. In said game, the other 3 members of the party leveled up and stopped there. Now, I'd be fine just auto-leveling him, but this player likes to play and asked for a make up session.

He's lv. 1, a human cleric necromancer and will be getting his undead companion back (killed by the father) early on. Any suggestions on how to handle a make up session for a single lv. 1 human necro cleric?

I'm relatively new to Dming, I can handle the rules and all, but have yet to fully understand proper encounter challenge rating. Any suggestions on something fitting for Carrion Crown?

EDIT: They had gotten some xp from the initial game, but they have the notes as to the exact number.

First off my personal opinion (and a lot of others out there) is to ditch the XP mechanic and just level your party at appropriate places. It frees up your game from this kind of stuff, from over/under leveling issues, from having to throw wandering encounters in, etc.

Now having said that, ...

The first thing that would be good to know is whether or not the current character is with the party or separated from the party? And, in general, where is the party in the AP (doing town stuff still, in Harrowstone, etc.)? The next thing to know is that since you are using XP and you are trying to level him, how much XP does he need?

One thing you could do in either case, is create a series of haunts for him in town to investigate, or even create a haunt similar to the one in Harrowstone that affects him psychologically (the name isn't coming to me right now, but it is one of the major haunts) where the entire adventure is taking place in his mind. This would make things easier on the story since nothing actually happens in town that the other PCs are missing out on.

Level one solo encounters are really tough to balance, since unlucky dice rolls can have such a huge effect compared to later in the game. I suggest you give him some detective work to do. He could find out who discovered the professor's body, conduct an interview, ask around about any strangers who were in town at that point (and learn about the three WW agents and their homonculus), etc.

Right. So more info if it helps. He's away from the party, the 3 that did the encounter without him just went through the first floor of Harrowstone and entered the top floor, having defeated the stirges, so that's as far as they've gone. Though I expect soon they'll be headed to the lower, more dangerous floors... I've warned them a few times they can be very dangerous.

I may have him investigate haunts in town. That might work perfectly. He doesn't have positive channeling though, so I'm not sure if he'd actually be able to stop some of them. So to find some that has alternate ways of stopping them may have to do.

Definitely another issue.

If you are going to do a solo mission with combat, I would give him an NPC to tag along (assuming you don't want to involve other party members).

I shall do that, although, since he's a necro cleric, he has his undead minion along with him. That may not be enough though.

Not to tout my own stuff (though that's exactly what I'm going to do), but I came up with three escalating haunts for each of the five prisoners. Some of the early, lower level ones might be appropriate as a single, manageable-by-one-PC type of encounter. Here's the Link . Hope that helps!
