I understand that maybe there are reasons, and maybe those folks are just peachy keen wonderful when we're not there. It doesn't change the fact that for me and a lot of Gencon attendees, the experience of the city itself remains horrible when we're there. Not just in how they treat us, how they treat the diner staff as well.
A lot of Gencon attendees? Not seen it. Indy has been nothing but welcoming. If what Lazar said was true, I think there would be few more posts along that vein. But there are not. Sounds like a case of nostalgia. It is not a typical experience.
Try it yourself and find out!

I've been to Gencon three times now and never found the people there anything but friendly. Last year I sent a fair amount of time playing PFS and had a great time. I went with friends but they were mostly off doing other stuff and I managed to find groups to join for every slot I booked into.
The muster system is a bit of a scrum so you have to be prepared to push yourself forward if you don't have a group. The big evening specials can also involve a fair amount of hawking yourself out as 100+ groups try to find enough people to play with. You can't be a wallflower or you will end up disappointed.

Yes, I keep getting emails from them and have used the same account on each visit. You can also link accounts as friends which is helpful for booking things to do together and also arranging hotels.
Hotels...grrrr. We lost at the lottery badly this year. We're at a Mariott twelve miles out from the convention center!

Ouch, that's not great. The first time I went we didn't know what we were doing and booked really late. We ended up in a very skeevy dive of a motel miles out of town. We learned quickly and got decent hotels the next two times. Hopefully going back next year, flight costs from the UK make a yearly visit a bit pricey.

I have a lot of rooms at the Marriott and JW Marriott across the street from the convention center for Tier 1 and 2 volunteers if you are interested. Gen Con call for volunteers will go out in approximately one month.

Here's my 2cp.
I'll either be a Tier 1 or 2 GM and share one of Paizo's hotel rooms -- a really good deal. Or if I decide I want to have a little more time off this year, I'll be a Tier 4 GM, get a complementary GenCon GM badge and stay about 10 minutes from downtown at a campground. It's not for everyone, but about $15/night gets me a place to set up my tent and a hot shower. When you're spending 20 hours a day at the convention center, it's a good deal. Oh, and for me it's a Bob Evans breakfast every morning using gift cards from my in-laws!

Not this year, alas. Gwenda and I are both guests on the writing track and I'm going to be lucky to get to sneak away to play a game or two.

Hopefully there is still time to go get a beer or three!

The good thing is we might have Sunday alcohol sales by the time Gen Con comes into town this year.
Believe it when I see it, BUT, with the outcry from the small breweries here in the state about limited barrel production (Which includes Sun King) for craft beer, maybe the state will change some beer laws :)

As an employee of the state legislature, I cannot comment on proposals before them.
