How about
"going to the boardroom",
"reduce to an awesome sauce", - reduction in cooking is awesome ;)
"taking off with the flyers",
"upgrading to 1st class seats"
"booking the penthouse",
... or simply...
"keepsie"

Thats the first interesting Earthbreaker hammer I've seen.
Fills a niche design space, but I would seek it out as a player on a certain type of quest.
In other news, I have upvoted the corniest item ever a whopping seven times, as I always hate its opposition item.
Re: Earthbreakers: I think you might be talking about the one my buddy submitted... It is actually really cool but I feel bad he got caught in this year's torc.
Re: Corny item: That's prolly indicative of it's relative position. It's not a bad design but it will get punished for its humor if prior years of voting trends hold. Joke items rarely survive post cull.

Yea, I hate to admit it buts after seeing soooo many I have to be very impressed by an earthbreaker to even consider an upvote. That said, if it was his, the name hooked me from the start.

Cull is definitely better than purge and I don't think we can—or should—soften it. To be a professional writer requires a thick skin and no matter what you call it, being cut will hurt...if you are aware of it. Remember they don't actually list whose items were culled. There is only the confirmation of seeing your item post-cull to know that it wasn't removed.
By leaving it as cull, it accurately describes the removal process and the inherent harshness of the cut. "Cut" could be used, but as anyone who was part of a tryout for anything could tell you it is no better. Cull is what emerged and barring overwhelming support for another term, cull it most probably shall remain.
Yeah it is probably not going to change. I would just like to encourage participation and being "slaughtered as an inferior" might dishearten some from learning from their missteps and entering again. I'm sure it will remain, but it never seemed like an official, profession term designed for the contest, but more of a nickname.

Having been one of the first to coin the term "The Cull" on the boards, I assure you it was meant with the cruel nasty snarkness it implies. I will also say that this year I have had a few "What The F*ck does this do" items but have not yet needed the brain bleach. Perhaps therms like "the pull" or the "Hard edit" may be more appropriate from now on.

"Pull" was the term first used, I think, and might even be a better word. But it won't kill the hurt from something you tried so hard on being broken by just about everyone. And that is effectively what it is: the public has spoken and your item doesn't impress.
We get that reading this thread is nasty for beginners, especially if they can identify when their item is being talked about and the mistakes they made. Hence the Armory of Awesome thread, to encourage people to participate.
We are caught in a seeming paradox here: we want to encourage all ideas and people to participate but we have to be draconian in what we let through. The voting process is probably very nerve wracking for the unsure and could discourage people from trying. The Critique My Item thread is where the polite criticism and encouragement we would all like to see comes in, but because of the ban on discussing items in particular that comfort doesn't start until after the Top 32 have had their day.
I like to think of this process as a very necessary test of the mettle of would be freelancers. If you can take this grief, listen to what is said, LEARN from it, and improve your item for next year then you might have a future in this business. If not then perhaps writing professionally isn't for you.
Just my 2 cents.

Whoa! Did I miss the memo that said entries must contain the Pathfinder Copyright notice? I've gotta be DQed, then. Damn!
Or maybe this is a passive/aggressive protest against all entries becoming property of Paizo? Oh, that is clever. Kind of whiny, but clever.
This occasionally annoys me... then I get over it when I realize you can always further refine it enough or simply reskin it so that it ISN'T Paizos... really not a hard thing to do.

Oh little item, I want to like you. I enjoy your flavor and the lore you are invoking. But, you are not a weapon, and even when you are, you are, there are rules already for treating you as a different kind of weapon. Lastly, I don't want to make a Profession check for combat. I want to like you, but your concept just doesn't seem to come together for me.

I hear you. It kind of sucks that they have the option to use it even if you don't make even the first round, but it is not like the average freelancer makes a lot of money on a >300 word submission. It is not worth that much.
I understand the reason for Paizo requiring that you give up the rights to your item. Incase they ever print something similar to your submission, even if it was developed independently from you idea, they don't want people to be able to sue for the "stolen" idea. You have the right to not enter if you don't like giving the little idea away. It is not like they are asking you to give up the rights to a novel or a pilot for a TV show that they might turn around and sell for a million dollars. It is unlikely to go anywhere other than our little niche hobby.

I've occasionally considered a Wayfinder-esque post superstar item book freebie. Everything would get an extra layer of polish or in some cases a rewrite. I'd prolly limit it to like 250 items (for may sanity) and see if anyone wants to donate time as an artist or layout guy.
The only thing that stops me is the concern I'd be taking Paizo IP and get sued.

Really? I'd be thrilled if Paizo used any of my designs; I bet the creator of the stubborn nail was thrilled to see it in UE, even if he/she probably wondered why it was good enough for the book but not to get him/her into Superstar.
I also assume Paizo pays its usual rate for anything it uses.

No, not really. I'd also be thrilled if they choose to publish something I created. But I could see how some people would not like it. I'm not sure I would have liked it the first few years of the competition, but I'm much more relaxed about it now. Just like I am about not making the top 32. I think I'll me happier if I don't make top 32. I'm looking forward to the critique time.

Hey, a new item! Been a while. And this might actually be a keeper. Sure, it's 299 words, one third of which could have been cut away easily, but the writing itself is good, the pricing seems to be about right, the formatting is textbook and as a whole I could see myself wanting and using this. A pleasant surprise.

'Late in the day' is relative and subjective to time zone. It's not like you don't still have over a week to vote with the new pool. :P
Meanwhile...
