Finding the Villain while searching for something else

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I've run into this situation a couple times and was wondering if I was missing a rule or if this is just something that happens in the game. This is my first post in the forums, so be gentle...

I've seen it happen a couple times where I'm searching the location deck for the first monster or an item, per a card ability, and happen to see the villain while searching. Is there a rule that deals with finding the villain without directly playing something looking for him or is it just a free peek? Seems to me cards that have you search for the first monster in a location could work better than character abilities that allow you to look ahead in the location deck.

No special rules, its just something that can happen. Though if the villain is a monster, it would fulfill the requirement of searching for a monster, so you might end up encounter it.

What cards are you thinking of in particular?

EDIT: Also, there is a difference between examine and search in the rules.

Examining and Searching

Sometimes a card allows you to examine one or more cards—that means looking at the specified card and then putting it back where it came from. If a card tells you to examine a deck until you find a particular card type, begin with the top card of that deck and stop when you have found a card of the correct type. Put the cards you examined back in the same order you found them, unless instructed otherwise. If you don’t find a card of the specified type, ignore any directions related to that card. (This does not count as exploring, though it may happen during an exploration.)

Sometimes a card allows you to search a deck and choose any card of a particular type; that means you may look at every card in the deck and choose any card of that type. Unless instructed otherwise, shuffle the deck afterwards.

"Examine" is used to tell you to look at a certain number of cards. For instance: Examine the top 2 cards of the location deck. Unless in structed otherwise, when you examine, you put them back in the same order they were in before you examine.

"Search" is used to tell you to look at the cards and choose a particular one. After searching, unless instructed otherwise, you shuffle the cards back up.

So while you might know which location a villain is in, you won't necessarily know which card the villain is in the deck.

Yep, free looks are awesome. This is what makes Dominate a pretty amazing spell. Even if you can handle it, go ahead and use Dominate to evade the first monster you run into at a location. Get a look at every single card in the deck, see if the villain is there, see if there are any horrible cards you'd rather not run into, see if there are any boons that people really want, and get to take a single boon from it for free. I never got to Adventure 6 in Runelords, so looking through my Bard Class Deck was the first time I got to see it. It will be my first priority upgrade in organized play once Adventure 6 comes out.
