Finished my first game this morning, overall I really liked it. It has just enough throwouts to Alpha Centauri to satisfy the fans and more than enough changes to make it it's own game not just a re-skin of Civ5.
The controls are almost the same as Civ5 but the mechanics are completely different, if you play this like you play Civ5 you will lose every time.
My only complaint is health of cities, it's similar to happiness in Civ5, you start with a really small amount but it is nearly impossible to produce enough health to offset the the negative health gained by city growth and the founding of new cities. I also don't think the game is adding the correct amount of health from buildings. For example in the game I played I founded a new city which took my health to -2, I bought two building for the city that should give me +3 health but only added +1 health.
[Edit] Paying closer attention in my next game the buildings do give the full health but only up to the population of the city. So if the building in a city give more health than the cities population you only receive the benefits of the health equal to the cities population.
So in beyond earth you're almost forced to keep your cities populations small and prevents you from founding a lot of cities.

I'm sure Firaxis wanted to also, unfortunately EA owns the rights to the game and I'm sure I don't need to explain EA.

I agree it doesn't feel much like Civ 5. I thought it would, especially after reading first-look reviews, but it felt like it had quite a few differences.
To begin with, I thought the "aliens" were just reskinned "barbarians", and kept building military units to try and deal with them. I kept getting constantly attacked by these suddenly high-powered fast-spawning "barbarians" :(
The way the affinities upgrade your base units are unique in themselves. Looking at how you can upgrade a Soldier to a Marine and so forth with upgrades in the tech tree - that's seriously cool.
Having said all that, I can see myself still playing more Civ 5, simply because BE is very science fiction-y, and I like the good old start from the ancient era.
