As someone mentioned before Paladin don't need to worship a deity to gain their powers...but well because it doesn't sit well with most people, they do.
There is nothing against it in the mechanics, but you will probably need to argue with your DM about it on the fluff side, which might not be worth the effort.
Then most people can hold on to their opinions while I hold onto mine.
I like The Dresden Files. You have Michael Carpenter, a very traditional Christian paladin (and Totally Freaking Awesome). You have Sanya, who is an Atheist and a paladin (who is pretty cool and also sort of believes in angels... I mean... aliens). He follows the philosophy of Communism. You have Shiro, who was a paladin who venerated kami and Elvis (who was also Very Freaking Awesome).
It's up to your DM. If he can spin it into a good story, Awesome. If it is too distracting for him, maybe the concept is just a little to odd for him to comfortably run it.
It varies.

As for a backstory -- well, YMMV and all that, but I could easily see a cleric of Shelyn (who is a very nice person and all that, but something of a wuss) feeling a call to serve her in a more aggressive role, and asking Torag for help.
Shelyn got Zon-Kuthon's glave Whisperer of Souls away from him when he was attacking her, and then proved to be immune to corruption by Whisperer of Souls and instead has slowly been extracting the souls that it devoured. She is tougher than you might expect at first glance. So she doesn't HAVE to subcontract out to other deities. That said, she is willing to go for help when needed, as in getting Nethy's help in getting the souls out of Whisperer of Souls, so situationally something like the idea quoted above could work.
Of course, it helps that apparently in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting deities (or at least some of them) are not entirely dependent upon their worshippers for power and survival, so this gives them latitude to be more cooperative than in many (most?) other settings.

The class "paladin" doesn't require a specific deity, so you could be a paladin of any (LG) concept or dogma... The big question is whether the deity you are a cleric of allows you to work for another deity...
As a gm, your chosen domains should be the same for both deities to allow it but: any LG follower (read NOT divine caster) can become a paladin... A LG divine caster can call himself a paladin, but no deity sharing...

Have you considered a Possessed Oracle?
Having a god hijacking another gods paladin could be interesting.
This with Thorin's example of Cayden Cailean made me think of a random paladin walking down a road, when all of a sudden, Cayden slings a beer mug of divine power down from the heavens and into his face. As it strikes his face, and the beer gushes out like a luxuriant mane, the scene freezes, and then the caption "BEER'D" is stamped on the image. And that is going to be the backstory of my next paladin of Abadar/oracle of Cayden Cailean.

Just because she's not as evil as her brother, nor as mindlessly berserk as Gorum, or singlemindly focused on demon smiting as Iomedae. doesn't make her a wimp. She's carried, neutered, and kept the Whisperer of Souls from her corrupted brother. Shelyn can and does raise her own order of Paladins thank you very much.
