I was quite excited when the new issue arrived in my mailbox yesterday. I have a question of the cover artist, or anyone else who might have an answer. . .

I'm trying to figure out the perspective of the central figure--it appears that the woman in the chair is leaning backward, the position of her shoulders and chest suggest that her head is lolling back out of view; however, the face of the (second?) figure seems to hover just over the top of the chest. The head also seems wider than the outside width of the shoulders. . .are there two figures or am I missing something about this one figure?
The clawlike hands suggest that she isn't quite human, does she have a serpentine neck?

It is an intriguing portrait; I'm just having a little trouble making out what it is I'm seeing.
