Today's blog covers which of the newest weapons fall into each weapon category. I don't know how often we'll update it, but it's current up through October 2015's publications.

What about going forward though? Isn't this just going to re arrise every year or so?

If we need to reassess every year or so, we can reassess every year or so. After putting up with my inquiries over the past couple weeks, I believe the other designers and developers are also more cognizant that defining weapon groups when publishing new weapon statistics is an appreciated step in the process. Space in future publications permitting, we may not have to revisit the matter at all.

New books have been better about immediately adding newly introduced weapons to a group...

I'm going with the close weapon group. Something similar is in there already :)
Although the spears group might also work.

Really depends on how long the pointy stick is.
Short? Stake equivalent, so close weapons
Medium? Spear equivalent, so spears
Long (with reach)? Longspear equivalent, so polearms, I would think.
