Investigator Master Chymist

Advice

So what do you think? Worth the change up or not? You get +6 to damage with simple weapons over 9 levels but that means you give up +4 to hit over those levels with studied combat.

I'd stay investigator, they have too much good stuff. I haven't got mine in a game in PFS but I think its one of my favorite classes now. Some of the talents are really good.

Investigator can't qualify for Master Chymist so the question is moot.

Except they can:

Quote:

Alchemist Discovery (Ex): The investigator can select one of the following alchemist discoveries as an investigator talent: combine extracts, concentrate poison, dilution, elixir of life, enhance potion, eternal potion, extend potion, infusion, mutagen, and poison conversion. When selecting an alchemist discovery, he must be high enough level to qualify for that discovery, using his investigator level as his alchemist level to determine if he qualifies. This talent can be selected multiple times; each time grants a new alchemist discovery.
Quote:

Mutagen (Su)
Benefit: This discovery gives the alchemist the mutagen class ability. (This discovery exists so alchemist archetypes who have variant mutagens, such as the mindchemist, can learn how to make standard mutagens.)

So they have mutagen, can take infusion and have extracts. Meaning they meet all the prerequisites.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You're missing one pereq:

Quote:

To qualify to become a master chymist, a character must fulfill all the following criteria.

Spells: Ability to create 3rd-level extracts.

Special: Mutagen class feature, feral mutagen or infuse mutagen discovery.

Investigators have access to neither discovery, and thus, do not qualify for Master Chymist.

(Note that Infusion != Infuse Mutagen.)

Well cluck a duck.

So either a two level dip is required or 7 levels of fighter.

And Master Chymists extract progression is explicitly based on Alchemist level.

At which point, taking any levels in Investigator for such a build becomes suspect.

It just doesn't work, because the class wasn't written with any sort of forward comparability in mind. (See also, bomb progression and the vivisectionist archetype.)

You can 1 level dip it if you dip on an odd level so you can take the feat Extra Discovery to pick up Infuse or Feral.

Sure, but the point is, what then are you getting from Investigator; the Master Chymist class is explicitly increasing your Alchemist extract progression and Alchemy, which is distinct from and does not stack with your Investigator caster level.

I mean, I suppose if you're doing the 2 level and out dip of Master Chymist to gain the two mutations and Furious Mutagen for a bigger damage die on your natural attacks, and go Inv 17/Alc 1/MC2, you might have an interesting and decent build, but it feels like too much effort for too little reward, tbqh.
