Can anyone with IT experience explain to me in simple words why the hell Windows Task Manager doesn't have an absolute priority over all other programs and task running on Windows?

In older Windows it worked better and then its ability to override unruly programs by switching with Alt+Tab was superior, but it feels like it slowly degraded in Windows 7, 8, and now in 10 when a program freezes/crashes/whatever, and I open Task Manager to close it, it's quite likely that alt+Tab will show me Task Manager being actually open, but won't let me switch to it to kill the offending task...

What's the point of having Task Manager if it doesn't force its way over the task it is supposed to be managing?

*grumble-grumble*

Meh. The new Civ6 update (or maybe the two DLC that are part of Civ6 Platinum Edition) keeps crashing too often.

The correct explanation is, "Thank you, Microsoft!"

Because a whole bunch of other people complained that Windows shouldn't be overriding focus from other programs for any reason whatsoever. They were louder than the rest of us.

I have some tools that might help with that.

Hammers and saws mostly, though the hammer chisel is surprisingly gratifying to use.

I wish I could say this is the sketchiest motel I've ever stayed in, but it's not. It's not even the sketchiest motel I've stayed in in Gallup. But it was the only thing under a hundred bucks a night.

It's been many years since I routinely traveled, but that's just kind of scary. Gallup's not exactly a major metropolitan area, and when I traveled back in the early aughts the price ranges for such areas were:

- $40-$50: The bed may be clean, but the room will reek of tobacco and the soundproofing will be nonexistent
- $50-$70: A perfectly decent "better than a Motel 6" room
- $70+: Now you're just spending money for a brand name

So yeah, inflation exists, but $100+/night for motel rooms in Gallup seems like highway robbery. (Literally! Robbery on a highway!)

EDIT: Just checked and heck, the low-grade motels near University and San Pablo are only $105/night, and the high-end, "I'd actually get a comfortable night's sleep here because I wouldn't be worried about the neighborhood," places are $167. And I'd expect Berkeley to be a teensy bit more expensive than Gallup.

Oh, the advertised rates on their websites are about that, but every single one is charging a 20/night covid recovery fee and another 20 "service" fee, on top of the local taxes. So a 50 dollar room becomes 90 plus tax. I don't know if that's just Gallup, or everywhere.

QUESTION 1: You want to change the PIN on your phone but you can't figure out how. Where would you go to find help? And if the help could be in any form at all, what would "the best help of all" be?

QUESTION 2: This time, one of your friends is encouraging you to switch to an online version of a game you've been playing as a local app. What kind of information would you want about the two different versions of the game? How would you want that information presented?

QUESTION 3: Your dad is making you cook dinner and hands you a recipe. You don't understand half the instructions. Would you rather get help on each instruction as you need it, or get one overall help item on "general cooking preparation" that would explain all of the steps? Again, what form would be best for you?

QUESTION 4: You're building your own PC. What kind of help would you want?

I don't use phone PIN on my phone in the first place...

Uh, why would I want to switch to online version of a game?

If it starts through Steam/Gog/Ubisoft client and support online play I might try it, if it doesn't support online play through Steam, then I won't be bothering with it anyway.

Google alternate versions of the recipe and compare them. If I wouldn't found anything similar, I'd request my dad to explain to me specific steps. I don't care about cooking that much to spend a lot of time bothering with it anyway, and keep cooking my own, low-effort dishes.

QUESTION 4: You're building your own PC. What kind of help would you want?

Financial support, and a lot of it, to afford the parts.

So if you ever want to come by and socialize with me, this article is a surprisingly good descriptor of my personality type: I am comfortable and confident socializing, but I find it exhausting and need lots of "alone time" to recover.

In particular, points 1 ("While you feel confident connecting with others, you also find alone time rewarding") and 3 ("Your desire to be social is always dependent on your current energy level") fit me to a T.

The only reason point 2 doesn't fit as well is because I don't "feel a rush of adrenaline" when socializing. I simply do it, I'm comfortable doing it, but afterwards I do indeed feel "totally exhausted afterward".

Now that I looked at it again... I can't really think of a modern game that would take form of a separate application for local and online games... Eventual online/multiplayer option is usually build in in the game itself.

The last such case I can recall was Dragon Age Legends (Flash interquel between DA1 and 2), which was a special case, because it was an online social flash game that was being taken down with the publisher leaving a single player version download for a time, to let the players that might not finished it yet have some more fun with it.

If only the same was done with Marvel's Avenger Alliance :(

The purpose of the question was to try to categorize the forms of help we offer (inline help, docs, "Why would I do this?", training) and translate it into terms that were easy for the kids to relate to.

For enterprise software, "Why would I want to migrate from my on-premise solution to a Cloud solution?" is a very serious question that people spend months (or even years) debating, discussing, and analyzing. But asking the kids about on-premise vs. Cloud enterprise applications wouldn't have gotten me a reasonable response.

An on-premise (local) game vs. a browser (Cloud) game is a close enough analogy that I got the gist of why they didn't trust Cloud-based games. (I've built a healthy dose of skepticism into those two.)

Yeah, they're actually very good questions for that kind of research.

Also...and I know I've ranted about this before...but I hate the very term "cloud". Like it's just something up in the sky that you don't have to worry about and have no control over. No. It's a cluster of servers in someone's data center. The question is if they're in your enterprise ("on-premise") or on someone else's servers (Amazon Web Services, as one of the more popular examples of "cloud based solutions"). Either way, the data takes up the same amount of space whether it's on your servers or theirs. The question is really about maintenance, availability, control over your own data, and data retention.

And it honestly is a tough choice to make with serious pros and cons that change from business to business depending on needs, budgets, and specific regulatory environments.

Oh, the problems I foresee with "themed" nursing homes... Arguments among the residents about who is or is not a "real" punk/goth/gamer/whatever. Complaints from dice slingers that their neighbor in the next room is a "filthy, card-flopping, Yu-Gi-Oh player". Threats of lawsuits from potential residents after you deny their application because they aren't "punk enough", or whatever.

It's kind of sad -- our new SVP is extremely enthusiastic about our biannual performance evaluations coaching sessions.

Yet:
(1) I can't get promoted.
(2) I won't get fired.
(3) My manager tells me every week what I'm doing right, and what I should work on improving.

So on the bright side, it's not a particularly stressful exercise for me. On the down side, I'm wasting 3-4 hours of company time taking my weekly status reports and digesting them down into, "Here's a quick summary of the contributions I've made this semester."

But meh, they're paying me for it. I'll do it.

OK. I'm all amusement. My name, home phone number, and address is available on "the dark web" (dun dun DAAAAAAAAH)! (Yeah, I hate that term. It's not like there's a separate internet for scammers -- it's just a lot of sites hidden behind paywalls.)

So, er, what are they going to do?

"Please reset the password for this account. Here's my phone number for two-factor authentication."
"I'm sorry, sir. That's a land line."
"WTF?!?!? Who uses land lines any more?!?!?!"

And yeah, if they call, they get Impus Major. Because he loves talking to scammers for as long as he can keep them on the line, and it's his summer vacation.

In short, I take minor glee in this news because someone is going to pay $0.005-$0.01 for this information, and will be getting ripped off.

Small victories, NobodysHome. Small victories...

The one thing I don't understand is why they always get my email address wrong. It's the one piece of information I give out freely, yet every 'dark web' alert I get has a complete nonsense email address. Really? It's like they're just looking in the phone book, putting up my name, address, and phone number and a fake email address, and selling it. Which, all in all, is pretty likely.

Speaking of scam artists, my credit card company just sent me a reminder: "You have a higher credit limit. Why aren't you using it?"

Er, because your 14.9% interest rate is borderline usury? Because I don't spend money just because I have it? Because there's nothing I want so desperately that I'm willing to go into debt over it?

I'm cruising towards retirement. I'm really, really desperate to be out of debt by the time I get there. So the idea that I'm going to incur even more debt just because you increased my credit limit is... out there!

And FTR, I don't make nearly enough money to pay off our mortgage in 11 years. My plan is that once all four kids (my two and my two nephews) decide that they don't want to live in my parents' house, we'll finally sell the place and I'll use the proceeds to pay off most of the mortgage. I can probably pay off 1/4 of my mortgage in 11 years.

It's great to have older indoor cats.

It used to be, "OMG! One of the cats got out! Quick! Everyone take a different direction! Fan out and find her before she gets too far or too lost!"

Now it's, "Oh, I found the Calico sitting on the sun-warmed concrete in the back yard. I wonder when she got out?"

They don't wander particularly far any more. It's pretty much, "I'm out! I'm out! Oh... sun! OK. I'll just lie down here for a while. I must have made it at least 10 feet!"
