Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to extend an invitation to everyone in the Alpha server to come help me do a little research by completely strip mining a Hex. We will be doing 2 things, killing every monster in the hex, as well as gathering every single resource node.

This event will last from 20 minutes after the server is up until AtwNB! So roughly 2-3 hours. We will be meeting in the Hex 2 North West of Sotterhill. This is a Hills/Highland Hex, and seems to have an even distribution of all four node types, as well as near a monster Hex, and probably has an escalation.

Here is who all I am looking for:

Clerics, Fighters, Rogues, Wizards of level 4+, as well as those of you that received gear from Bonnie to help fight back the high end escalation if there is one. Tier 1 (Level 1-7) Dowsers, Foresters, Miners, and Scavengers, as well as Tier 2 (Level 8+) of those four.

If you are making new characters for the Gatherers this might help you:

First, Dowser/Forester/Scavenger level 9+ is in Osterburg, while Miner 9+ is in Cloverdell.

Dowser needs at least 14 Personality to get to level 8, you will have to purchase all level 1-3 Cantrips from the Wizard, as well as 3 levels of Base Attack Bonus, I think some Power, and Resiliency from the Rogue Trainer, and of course Dowser and Sage.

Best Class for Dowser is Wizard

Forester/Scavenger need at least 14 Wisdom to get to level 8, this is pretty easy, just get a lot of Wisdom based Orisons/abilities from Cleric, as well as will based defenses, you can also pick up perception, apothecary, and of course both Forester and Scavenger.

Best Class for Forester/Scavenger is Cleric

Miner needs at least 14 Constitution to get to level 8, going to tannery, smelter, and sawyer will give a nice boost, as well as all fortitude defenses, hp, recovery, and shield feats.

Best Class for Miner is Fighter

I am glad somebody is going to try this.
I believe I have appropriately handled this edge case, but I'd like to know how well this goes.

Enjoy your low quality harvests! Note: Without an encumbrance system, the low quality is no different from the high quality... for now. I suggest you use them up before that changes. :D

Arg I've spent 1 hour in alpha (running to the farthest extremes of the map killing and gathering on the way, don't question the process!!) but I haven't applied a single xp in training yet. 20 minutes should be enough right?

If you have a higher skill, you will harvest faster.

Buying level 2 or 3 will have a significant impact on your harvesting time, and is relatively low cost.

Certain resources won't drop unless you are higher level.
But if you want high quality stuff, you have to train a bit more. Some known thresholds are:
Silver at Miner 4
Maple at Forester 8
Gold at Miner 10
etc for all harvesting skills and most levels

Yes, you have made for some agonizing choices. You devil, you! ;)

It's possible to get level 9 forester, scavenger, apothecary, and level 8 iconographer, all under 100K XP.

Friday night is always a good time for a strip party...

If you are participating and will have a twitch broadcast, please post to this thread. This is RDO Friday == day off. I would enjoy the party.

I should have 3, Tier 2, Harvesters and a T2 Fighter with Melee/Range out there harvesting.

I wonder if the Viridian Circle will be counting alpha time in their nature defense positions...

I am logging in now, we should get started in about 20-30 mins, people are getting builds together.

Alright so,

14 people participated, there were actually more, but these are all the names I got.

Nihimon
Angie
Tigari
Approximate Sin
Test Dowswer
Garr
Kadere
Galderon
Caldeathea
Gpunk
Oromeh
Bluddwulf
Nytcrawlrth
Deacon

We mined/killed for around 3 hours, after about an hour and a half T2 stuff stopped dropping, and most of the Mining and Plant nodes stopped spawning. By the 3 hour mark almost all nodes were Essence Nodes.

For Spawns, They were 10-15 seconds a part when starting, by the end Spawns seemed to be around 30 seconds a apart. They were really spread out evenly to start, but by the end, well even after 2 hours, they began to clump together in spawns of 3-5, with 2 NPC in all but 1 of them.

I got in order....

Uncanny Antithesis Essence x60
Otherwordly Antithsis Essence x68
Mysterious Antithesis Essence x20
Eerie Antithesis Essence x104

In that exact order and amounts, so we were having an impact.

If anyone else that helped wants to speak up, give their opinions, what they gathered, killed, anything they observed that would awesome.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

I was there (as Angie). I am only specc'd highish into mining. I noticed a marked loss of the amount of nodes available to farm, as well as a drop in the coal and silver+ I was getting. Don't take that as data though, I need to get back into game and list my actual mining results.

I am curious what the final number of participants was, and how many of them were there for All-Some-Most of the three hours. I hope those that participated respond for the count.

Sorry we had some issues. There is something going on with trading and we need to figure it out.

So we know a group can wipe a hex out in short fashion...so the question becomes just how limiting the increased encumbrance of lower quality materials becomes.

Even still, I wonder if a group should be able to completely deplete a hex in 3 hours. It seems like something that should take more time, to me.

How quickly do the resources regenerate after depletion?

Glad to see somebody did this! Its always fun to test the game in extreme environments :)

In the current iteration of the game, there's only easy-mode smack-a-node gathering. Later there will be hard-mode, mother-lode harvesting, which will require harvesting kits and will attract mobs that attack the harvesters.

They've currently upped the drops from easy-mode harvesting. Later, a good proportion will come from the mother-lodes. So it might seem easy now to deplete a hex, but later, trying to deplete a hex might take more time (to find a good mother-lode) and will require a lot more people to fight defensive versions of escalations whilst mining as much as possible.

As time passed the items definitely changed without overlap; once I got the first B I never saw another A etc.

Also the prefixes of items arced in a way that connotes lower quality. Perfect turned into intact, potent to dilute, etc.

Meanwhile for as close to a control sample as possible I went 1 hex north whose off-the-rails Razmiran escalation made it appear to have been barely occupied the entire time. The types of nodes were widely varied and I got perfects, potents, and even multiple item harvests which never occurred in the test hex.

Thanks for the info, Urman

This is the question I'd like to see an answer to.
