Just the fact that so many people are scrambling to grandfather in as many aasimars/tieflings as possible indicates that it really was a problem. Sure, some people saying, "Oh, I wanted to try something with an A/T, I'd better make and run it now!" is fine. But when it becomes, "Quick, how many A/T can I get in the door before it closes?" it suggests that the availability of the race itself is the problem.

Seriously, if the tengu were stopped, would there be this same rush for tengu? No. No, there wouldn't.

I'm not so sure.

Part of the scramble to create aasimars/tieflings is to have them (one or more) "banked", just so a player should have the option later. I am sure that a lot of the 1XP plane-touched PCs being created in the days leading up to the cut off will never be played... or rather will be "re-trained" as a different race later when the player has a "great idea" for a new PC, and wants that XP on his "new guy".

PCs numbers that have 1XP on them between now and the 14th CAN BE (but don't HAVE TO BE) an aasimar or tiefling. This gives those PCs more options... and players much prefer having more options, even if they never use them.

I never felt that way. I've created quite a few characters in the past two years, and rarely even considered tiefling or aasimar as possible races for them. I almost always consider human for any build, because the extra feat is so useful for certain builds, but I look at other options based on what I'm trying to do with the character. That's how I ended up with a gnome bard and half-orc cleric, when I could have made tiefling or aasimar characters instead.

My DM credit this year will be stocking the SS Skulk full of kitsune though.

In my experience people who are building for cheese start with Human 90% of the time.

I'd certainly be rushing to make one, I don't have a Tengu yet.

Agreed. The only reason I am going to Grandfather in a Tiefling is simply because I don't have one yet.

Yeah, I'm probably going to do that with an aasimar.

I didn't have an aasimar or a tiefling before the announcement. I already had an idea for a tiefling that I hadn't actually created yet, but I had already bought Blood of Fiends just for that. The announcement just got me to actually finish making him.

But I also had a paladin idea I've wanted to try out, and knowing that I won't have another chance to make an aasimar, and that they make such good paladins, and that the Blood of Angels PDF is on sale right now...
