Scarab Sages

And.....by Monday morning we had yet another armadillo in the trap. That's three armored squirrels and a possum caught, in less than two weeks.

Scarab Sages

Today, we had a second possum trapped. That's five critters in just over two weeks. Next Wednesday will be the last day of trapping that I paid for. Still, it's been worth it.

Scarab Sages

Of course, by Saturday, the count was up to six critters. We had another armadillo trapped.

It seems a more permanent solution is called for.

Scarab Sages

In the four weeks since we first set traps, there have been 7 armadillos and (as of today) 3 possums caught.

That's a lot of critters for a thin strip of woods behind the house. I'm beginning to suspect that other companies might be releasing critters they catch at that location. The company I have takes them farther out.

Scarab Sages

Make that four possums, but nothing this morning.

Scarab Sages

Our trap rental is done, as of yesterday. Final tally: 8 Armadillos and 4 possums. All over the course of one month, from an area two football fields long by one football field wide.

Finally! School is on the verge of being back in session! I won't have to put up with the children 24/7 anymore!!! Huzzah!

Scarab Sages

Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love ya, tomorrow! You're only a daaaayyy awaayyyy!!!

Scarab Sages

Lesson 22 - Blessed Silence.

Scarab Sages

First week of the kids back in school is done. Huzzah! The house is so quiet during the day. It's wonderful.

The dog, of course, seems to not like her brother and sister going away all day.

Scarab Sages

Apparently, getting some electrical shocks can really mess you up. At least, temporarily.

Scarab Sages

Why am I getting a phone call from Clarksville, TN? I don't think I know anyone there.

Scarab Sages

I might finally be done with Facebook. It was bad enough when the phone app started putting all kinds of crap on my display that I never wanted or asked for (like Marketplace and Watch), without giving me the option of hiding them. Now they've done the same thing for the desktop version. I find it all very annoying.

Scarab Sages

Lesson learned - avoid visits to the veterinary office as much as possible. A $700 dollar visit with no conclusive determination as to what might be wrong is just not worth it.

Scarab Sages

It's kind of similar to the reason I hate going to the doctor.

Scarab Sages

The dog has been going through her first heat. It's very....challenging....to get a 70 lb German Shepherd to wear a diaper.

Scarab Sages

Woke up to cold(ish), rainy weather. On the plus side, the kids were excited to wear their new jackets.

Scarab Sages

Halloween, arguably my favorite holiday ever, is just a few days away. Sadly, I'm just not feeling it this year. I'm even regretting putting up all my decorations.

The kids are excited, though. The boy is going as The Mandalorian. The girl is going as The Child.

Scarab Sages

A cool morning here in Houston. Somewhere in the 40's. No wind, though, so it was nice enough.

Scarab Sages

Had a FB friend request from the wife of one of my old Philly gaming group dudes (he doesn't do FB). She wanted to let me know he and the others were starting a new D&D game, and had been talking about how to include me.

I called him yesterday evening, but he wasn't somewhere he could talk at the time. Maybe I'll try him again today.

Scarab Sages

Sooooo.....

Last night I jumped on a website called Roll20 and did a virtual gaming session with my old Philly Group. Actually, we went back and forth between this Roll20 and Discord. It was fun.

We built characters for a 5E game, something I never thought I'd do. The guy acting as DM wants to run us through Rime of the Frostmaiden, which I've heard is pretty cool.

Anyway, we'll see how it goes. No matter what, it was at least nice to think I actually had friends again.

Scarab Sages

Well, my favorite holiday of the year is over. I had gone into it this year with great hesitation. I just wasn't sure I wanted all the annoyance. Yet I went ahead as usual anyway.

Turns out my initial instinct was correct. Not only did my subdivision (I can no longer bring myself to call it a neighborhood) not have many trick or treaters, we had far fewer people willing to give out treats. And that number was never great to begin with.

The really sad part was, we had perfect weather for it. The best weather in years.

All in all, it was f+#$ing pathetic.

Next year, I think I'll forgo doing anything in my own area, and just find a better, actual neighborhood for my kids to trick or treat in. Some place where the so-called adults don't let fear (or general a@!%&+*ness) drive them to disappoint children.

Scarab Sages

Well, at least I didn’t have an oil and gas job to lose anymore.

Scarab Sages

I discovered a new to me feature in Campaign Cartographer the other day that encouraged me to delve into my long-dormant math skills.

Scarab Sages

Sooooo...

My father-in-law, who got laid off months ago due to a certain THING WHICH SHALL NOT BE NAMED, is typically very bored. He also tends to annoy the shit out of my mother-in-law. He's still a pretty good dude though, and the kids love him.

Anyway, yesterday morning he calls my wife and says he's coming for a visit. That's cool. The only problem was, he was leaving that morning to drive the six-ish hours to our house. Which gave the wife an I just that much time to get the house straightened up and do some grocery shopping to accommodate a visitor.

Needless to say, by the afternoon, my back and shoulder were in lots of pain, and we were both very tired.

But the look on my daughter's face (Grumpy is her favorite), and her being speechless for nearly 30 seconds, made it all worthwhile.

Scarab Sages

However, my wife did let him know that next time, he should give us a little more advance notice.

Scarab Sages

Finally started job hunting again. It'd been about 3.5 months since I bothered, so I figured it was about time. Not that I have high hopes...

What brought it on was the wife interviewing with...I forget who....and them saying the job might be in either the DFW area, or over in Orlando, FL. I'd prefer not to have to move, because it's a pain in the ass.

Scarab Sages

I used to think Houston was a good city for Engineers. Not any longer.

It's one thing for me to not be able to find a job. I've made some stupid decisions that ended up hurting my resume. My wife, however, has had a stellar career, is highly capable, and really enjoys what she does. Yet she's also been having trouble finding work.

Scarab Sages

All I know is, judging from my own experiences, I'm going to encourage my kids to find something they can make a decent living at without wasting a lot of time and money on a college degree. That's something I wish I had done, but I fell into the trap they pushed on us in high school.

Scarab Sages

Just for shits and giggles, last night I watched Enter the Ninja. Watching Franco Nero pretend to be a ninja is always fun. Plus, you get Sho Kosugi, in what I think was his first major role.

The night before last, also just for shits and giggles, I watched Ninja Assassin, which I think was Sho Kosugi's most recent film role.

In both movies, Sho plays one of the villains.

Scarab Sages

So I thought to myself....

Why does this arrow seem to be getting closer?

....And then it hit me.

Scarab Sages

Finally got around to watching the middle film of Hammer's Karnstein trilogy. It was okay.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of Hammer. The other night, just for shits and giggles, I watched a documentary about the studio. It was about 2-1/2 hours long, and narrated by Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

That was really cool.

Scarab Sages

Stoopid rain.

Scarab Sages

I think today was the least amount of big grocery shopping I’ve done in years.

Scarab Sages

Monday morning surprise root canal. What a shitastic way to start a week.

Scarab Sages

Watched the new Mel Gibson movie Fatman last night. Good movie. Weird premise, but it took itself seriously. Kind of reminded me of The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot (which I'll probably watch tonight).

Scarab Sages

The kids didn’t have to go to school today, so that teachers could have a “planning” day. More likely, just an excuse to not work.

Of course, they made sure to send home packets of work with each child that parents don’t get paid to help them with.

Scarab Sages

The other night I watched the anime Ghost in the Shell, which I had never seen before. It was interesting.

Last night I tried watching Robot Carnival, but found it annoyingly stupid.

So then I tried to find my copy it Vampire Hunter D, but I’m not sure where
I put it.

Scarab Sages

I’m firmly convinced the Universe is a cruel mistress with a love of seeing others suffer. And for some reason, she’s angry with me.

Scarab Sages

I never did find my copy of Vampire Hunter D. That annoys me to no end.

Scarab Sages

Mmmm.....fresh red beans and rice.

Scarab Sages

Took advantage of a few days of really beautiful weather. Got the kids outdoors a bit, including for a walk around the neighborhood lake. Today the boy and I took down the exterior Christmas decorations.

Scarab Sages

New year, same old shit.

Scarab Sages

Well, f@$@. Now we may have to move to Dallas. Clearly, the universe hates me, but I cannot fathom what I could have done to offend it. Although I sure there are some people around here who would gleefully offer their suggestions.

Scarab Sages

We may not have to move to Dallas after all. The wife has received another job offer, for a company here in Houston. This one would be less pay than her old job (by a significant amount), but would be working from home.

Although I'm totally aghast at the thought of moving to Dallas, I'm still encouraging her to at least see what they offer. From what she told me, though, there's a good chance the money for the Dallas job would be about the same as the job offer here in Houston, which would make staying the logical choice.

Scarab Sages

GODSDAMNIT LOCKHEED!! You dumb f*%!ers had one job. ONE JOB!!! Not to offer my wife way more per year than what the job here in Houston is offering.

F#~+ing a$+%%%@s.

Scarab Sages

I was surprised the other day to learn that the Pathfinder Kingmaker game had made its way to the PS4. I hadn't bought it for the computer because (a) I had other things I preferred to occupy my time with, and (b) I didn't want to overburden my poor old computer.

But those other things have gotten kind of boring, and with it on the PS4, I don't have to burden my computer at all. So I ordered it off Amazon. I've heard good things about it. We'll see if it lives up to the hype. I have my doubts.

Scarab Sages

I've been playing the Kingmaker game, off an on, for a few days now. It's pretty cool. Though I think they over did it on some things. The recipes and food ingredients are a bit much. The timing system on some events has a tendency to take joy away from my playing.

Scarab Sages

Stupid ice and snow and winter weather. Still, at least my house only loss power for about an hour one night. Others have not been so lucky.
