Please forgive me if this has already been addressed and please point me in the right direction; I couldn't find it.
What's with the differences between the landgrab.png map and the "more detailed" map? For example, the landgrab map shows broad swaths of highlands with clusters of mountains at their center but on the more detailed map, those areas are all changed to nothing but mountains instead of highlands.
Additionally, the cluster of mountains around 02.13 has a bunch of campfire icons that are not described in the legend.

There was a dev post that explained that when they were laying out the map, they had used those campfire markers to ensure every settlement hex had no monster hexes, etc., directly adjacent. They removed most of the campfire markers, but posted the more detailed map with some that hadn't been removed. The campfires icons can be ignored.

The larger map that includes the coordinates was not actually supposed to be released. Lee said he accidentally mailed Ryan the wrong map.
I believe that the most official map we have so far is the Original Land Rush Map that was sent to TEO, Pax, and TSV when we were given about 36 hours to make our final choices - it was fun!
I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about, but the initial map seemed to make a distinction between "Hilly Forests" (for example, AD and AC) and orange "Mountains" (for example, between AD and AC). My understanding is that the whole area is actually mountains, so the distinction went away.
As for the campfires...
Ignore the campfires, they are a tool I use when mapping things to make sure settlements aren't too close to each other. Basically I put a usually invisible campfire symbol in any hex right next to a settlement to make sure there are no monster hexes there, other settlements, etc.
