Bane / Boon when applying chronicle sheet to a level 1 pfs character

GM Discussion

Lantern Lodge 4/5

This came up this week as I had a player at my table who was playing to apply his pregen chronicle to a brand new level 1. The chronicle comes with a spiffy little flavorful boon, as well as some nice eventual item access. However I wanted to make sure I did it right in granting him access to all the boons at level 1 and eventual item access he had earned in the scenario, as well as the 500 gp.

When you change a pregen chronicle into a level 1 chronicle, you get everything you'd normally get, save that the gold is reduced.

So you did right.

IMHO boons and item access are still considered locked until the character reaches the level that grants the access/boons.

So no free 3000 gp item for a 1st level character for instance.

Grand Lodge 4/5

That's not what the guide says, Auke. If you reduce a chronicle to level 1, the only change is the gold.

You may also opt instead to apply the Chronicle sheets earned with a non- 1st-level pregenerated character to a 1st-level character with the amount of gp gained reduced to 500 gp (or

250 gp for characters using the slow advancement track). You do not lose access to any of the Prestige Points, boons, or items listed on the Chronicle sheets that were earned during the adventure.

Bolding mine.

I'm not saying you'd lose them, I'm just saying it might be unbalanced if the 1st level character gets to use the favor/boon/access at 1st level when it's supposed to be a (for instance tier 7-11) reward. Delaying the use of those favors/boons/rewards to the appropriate level is not losing the reward, it's just waiting.

As long as no one is abusing this it should be ok though, but if someone goes harvesting these it might be considered against the "don't be a jerk" rule and should be addressed.

Until then, let's not argue about hypothetical situations. There are enough threads about those already! ;-)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It is not a hypothetical situation. The original poster stated that this situation came up this week.

The rules do not say a player must wait on item access or boons. When converted to a level 1 Chronicle sheet by reducing the gold, the PC gets everything immediately.

If you don't like the rules, they can be changed. But this is how it currently works.

I think the hypothetical he was talking about was a person deliberately going after a chronicle they know has a high value boon (like the aforementioned expensive item) with a pregen character so they can get it on a level 1 character.

So I'm coming up against this same situation as a player. Since this thread was the first reference I found that addressed it, I'm resurrecting it. (As a L1 fighter, this is hard, but I tripped over something sticking out of the dirt, and it turned out it was an Oil of Resurrection.)

I played an L7 pregen and applied it to a L1 character. (It's hard to find Tier 1 games for some reason.) I don't exactly have the cash for the items on the chronicle sheet, but I might have it before I reach L5. (It was a 5-9 encounter.)

The wording in Season 6 changed a little. They specifically limited access to boons until you reach appropriate level for the Chronicle sheet. As I read it, that means I have access to all of those materials now, right, and if I had the cash I could purchase them?

Grand Lodge 4/5

Since the change was just to boons, yes, you still have access to purchase anything unlocked on the chronicle, even at 1st level.

Getting the cash early, though, is the sticking point. Don't maim your PC just to get something spiffy early, as it may cause other problems when your general item level, other than that one thing, could be lower than it should be, causing other issues.

Oh, absolutely. It was mostly a question for clarification and curiosity. Though I might buy one of the items before I hit 5, I won't be buying them with my L1!

Oh, that's an interesting change, I wonder how that would work with the

Reign of Winter chronicle spoiler:
Baba Yaga's Rider boon which says you can't assign credit to the PC for two years.

Reign of Winter Spoiler:
My understanding is that you can apply that Chronicle to a level 1, though you could only do that by playing Campaign Mode or (as of this Season) GM Credit. There aren't any Pregens for that tier.

As you mentioned you still have to wait two years to actually *use* said character, but if my Reign of Winter group ever gets that far, I have plans of putting an Aasimar in a Time Capsule...
