How would one address Sarenrae?

Advice

The dm kind of hinted that it may benefit my pally if I compose a prayer to Sarenrae asking for her advice. I'm pretty stuck on the opener, though. A group member suggested "Dear Sarenrae" but that just doesn't sound right to me...

Any suggestions? I've read the entry in the Inner Sea Guide and her pages in Faiths of Purity but no guidelines for prayer are really given. I'm not a religious person myself so I'm pretty stumped on these types of things.

By her title would probably work. According to a wiki, she's called ' The Dawnflower', 'The Everlight', or 'The Healing Light'. Then be as obsequious and brown-nosing as you possibly can.

O Glorious Dawnflower, giver of the Healing Light, your unworthy servant begs you for a boon ...

Knowing her generaly conciliotpry and diplomatic nature, I dont think she would necessarily be hyper-conscious of titles & such.

I would emphasize honesty & directness. I dont think she's the type that would appreciate brown-nosing (though that may just be my perception).

Those aren't really titles... they are ways to speak of a deity WITHOUT saying the deity's name. So her priests would likely simply say Sarenrae. Others will call her the Dawnflower or the like.

I think it would depend on what the paladin was beseeching her help with. If it were a question about healing, it my begin something like, O Sarenrae, bringer of The Healing Light, your humble servant asks your wisdom..."

If it were regarding dealing with undead, it may go "Highest Sarenrae, The Everlight, your crusader is in need of your assistance in a matter regarding the scourge of the dead yet not dead..."

I would think about what I was going to ask Sarenrae's advice for, then use a title for her that was appropriate for the topic, then describe yourself in the role you will be taking. Normally pallys- in my experience- have referred to themselves as champions, servants, crusaders, bulwarks.

Hope this helps!

There won't be any brown-nosing-- My pally has too much respect for himself and his faith for that.

I have the actual words of the prayer down already, I just need help with the opener.

Far from it, to my eyes. Worshipping a deity means that one recognizes that they are imperfect and could use guidance from a higher being in order to improve.

Otherwise, you are placating your god, not worshipping them.

I was originally going to just have the paladin begin his prayer without any kind of opener, like just start "talking" to her as if he assumed she was listening, but the group pretty much agreed that one should address their god directly when they pray.

I don't know if I agree, for instance I know of a couple Christians who don't use any sort of formal address when they pray, but I'm willing to pick my battles in this campaign so I'll try to come up with something. :)

I assumed he meant the deity had an overdeveloped sense of self-worth, not the worshiper.

My current character is a follower of Sarenrae, and when it comes time to pray she'll look skyward, her eyes searching a bit (as if looking for something only she can see, but actually representing the 'questing' nature of most faithful servants) and start with, "Fire of my zeal and Light of my compassion, hear me, I pray." Then, of course, the prayer itself.

As it doesn't evoke titles or show a lack of deference but instead the personal things that the Goddess means to her (and most of her followers, I would think), I think it shows a strength of both faith and respect.

Oh, I see. I may have been mistaken in my reply.

I don't see Sarenrae as one who'd like to listen to a bunch of undue posturing from her followers, though. One of her virtues is honesty.

Is the character typically verbose and flowery in speech? Or does she speak simply? As you said, honesty is big...don't change what you are for the prayer. If it's a particularly weighty/important prayer, there are other ways to indicate that beyond a pattern of speech (e.g. address it at dawn, make a point of bathing/polishing your boots, spend an hour in especial contemplation of your vows and/or actions leading up to this point). My two favorite openers are "Sarenrae..." and "Hi...".

You, Sarenrae, you are the light of everything.

Your glare reaches down to the abyss
So that monsters of the deep behold your light. . . .
You destroy the horns of a scheming villain,
Your weapon will strike at him, and there will be none to save him.
My goddess, the universe longs for your light. . . .
Which are the mountains not clothed with your beams?
Which are the regions not warmed by the brightness of your light?
Brightener of gloom, illuminator of darkness,
Dispeller of darkness, illuminator of the broad earth.

He's got a high diplomacy/charisma but when it comes to being personal he's not as smooth as when he's being professional, so to speak. If he's mediating a conflict between the party or speaking for our cause he's great. If he's talking about his feelings or asking for help he struggles.

I think I'm going to just go with "Sarenrae," and then follow the prayer. It's really what I feel the character would do if there's no expected way to address her. Doing it as ceremoniously as possible at dawn should be good enough for the dm. Thanks for your input.

"Lady Sarenrae, hear my prayer!" ought to do it unless you feel like hamming it up.

Though it might work best if one worships Gorum.

Gorum is the manifestation of Crom on golarion.

So f*ckin HUGGGEEEEE.....
Gosh, we're all really impressed down here I can tell you...

Short and to the point, but wordy enough that you're paying the proper respects. Think "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name".

So you could have it go something like: "Dawnflower, Healing Light and great redeemer..." and then the rest of the prayer.

JUICE NEWTON
"Angel Of The Morning"
(Chip Taylor)

There'll be no strings to bind your hands
Not if my love can't bind your heart
There's no need to take a stand
For it was I who chose to start
I see no need to take me home
I'm old enough to face the dawn

Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Then slowly turn away from me

Maybe the sun's light will be dim
And it won't matter anyhow
If morning's echo says we we sinned
Well, it was what I wanted now
And if we're the victims of the night
I won't be blinded by light

Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Then slowly turn away
I won't beg you to stay with me

Through the tears of the day
Of the years, ba-a-a-by
Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, darlin'
Just call me angel of the morning, Angel
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, darlin'

Shelyn has a song about Sarenrae called 'Feathers on my Pillow.'

But, to be fair, Shelyn has lots of songs in that vein, about lots of different people...

Shadow Lodge

Hey! Yo! Bright eyes!

A version of the son "Venus" (by Bananarama) where instead of saying "I'm your fire" you say "You're my fire".
Heck, you could just change all the references to "venus" to Sarenrae.

Goddess on the mountain top
Burning like a silver flame
The summit of beauty and love
And Sarenrae was her name

She's got it
Yeah, baby, she's got it
I'm your Sarenrae, I'm your fire
At your desire
Well, I'm your Sarenra, I'm your fire
At your desire

Her weapons were her crystal eyes
Making every man mad
Black as the dark night she was
Got what no one else had
Wah!

She's got it
Yeah, baby, she's got it
I'm your Sarenrae, I'm your fire
At your desire
Well, I'm your Sarenrae, I'm your fire
At your desire

Sarenrae
...

Doesnt flow quite as well, but stll seems appropriate.

To whom it may concern: I hope this missive finds you in good health. There is a matter I wish to bring to your attention.

I think the bigger question is how does your DM run Sarenrae? Actually gods in general. What do you think the DM is looking for? Do they want you to go out of your comfort and write out a long wordy prayer? Do you think they would want you to gather a bunch of common folk and lead a sermon praising Sarenrae and finishing with asking for a blessing and guidance?

@OP: Respectfully.

Dear Respected One,

GREETINGS,

Permit me to inform you of my desire of going into business relationship with you. I got your contact from the International web site directory. I prayed over it and selected your name among other names due to it's esteeming nature and the recommendations given to me as a reputable and trust worthy person I can do business with and by the recommendations I must not hesitate to confide in you for this simple and sincere business.

Daily Prayers to Sarenrae

Dawn Prayer
It comes!
Through thy divine grace, O Great and Glorious Sarenrae,
The sun of righteous fire rises with healing in its wings!
The glory of the Dawnflower shines upon us.
More precious than gold, your shining splendor.
Sweeter than honey, your radiant forgiveness.
Oh dispeller of darkness, shining one,
radiant and effulgent goddess of mercy,
You banish choking night and the blindness of our ignorance.
The Dawn brings new light. Sarenrae be praised.

Evening Prayer
Lady of the golden sun,
Bless and protect your servants
Now that the day is done.
The earth turns cold and dead
Without your Healing Flame.
I light this candle in your honor,
that you might gather strength
and return to us the nourishment of your fire.
You are the Everlight.
So long as Sarenrae endures, the sun endures.
So long as the sun endures, we endure.

Anyone have a decent idea for a theme song for Mahou Shoujo No Sarenrae (magical girls of Sarenrae)? They're a team of magical girls (cleric, inquisitor, paladin, dawnflower dervish bard & dissident of dawn) that fight evil.

I've got their basic builds set up and everything. Now all I've got to find is players willing to play them, and a GM willing to run the game. This might actually be cool for WotR. But will that ever happen? Probably not...

Sounds like a fun campaign. :3 I always appreciate games that don't take themselves so seriously.
