If it's a particularly weighty/important prayer, there are other ways to indicate that beyond a pattern of speech (e.g. address it at dawn, make a point of bathing/polishing your boots, spend an hour in especial contemplation of your vows and/or actions leading up to this point). My two favorite openers are "Sarenrae..." and "Hi...". He's got a high diplomacy/charisma but when it comes to being personal he's not as smooth as when he's being professional, so to speak. If he's mediating a conflict between the party or speaking for our cause he's great. If he's talking about his feelings or asking for help he struggles. I think I'm going to just go with "Sarenrae," and then follow the prayer. It's really what I feel the character would do if there's no expected way to address her. Doing it as ceremoniously as possible at dawn should be good enough for the dm. Thanks for your input.
You have the right to be whatever you want, that doesn't mean that others HAVE to put up with you. It's really up to the group to decide if that's something they're willing to put up with. My advice to you is just to apologize for showing up hungover and don't do it again. I'm sure they'll forgive you if you honestly enjoy playing with them and you want to be a team player.

Oh, I see. I may have been mistaken in my reply. I don't see Sarenrae as one who'd like to listen to a bunch of undue posturing from her followers, though. One of her virtues is honesty.

I was originally going to just have the paladin begin his prayer without any kind of opener, like just start "talking" to her as if he assumed she was listening, but the group pretty much agreed that one should address their god directly when they pray. I don't know if I agree, for instance I know of a couple Christians who don't use any sort of formal address when they pray, but I'm willing to pick my battles in this campaign so I'll try to come up with something. :)

Far from it, to my eyes. Worshipping a deity means that one recognizes that they are imperfect and could use guidance from a higher being in order to improve. Otherwise, you are placating your god, not worshipping them.
The dm kind of hinted that it may benefit my pally if I compose a prayer to Sarenrae asking for her advice. I'm pretty stuck on the opener, though. A group member suggested "Dear Sarenrae" but that just doesn't sound right to me... Any suggestions? I've read the entry in the Inner Sea Guide and her pages in Faiths of Purity but no guidelines for prayer are really given. I'm not a religious person myself so I'm pretty stumped on these types of things.
I recently bought the "Faiths of Purity" PDF. I downloaded it to another computer, but I've since replaced that one and want to download it to my new one. It doesn't appear under My Downloads anymore, though the Core Rulebook I bought years ago does. Do I only get a limited amount of downloads or something? |
