'ello all - isn't Monday fun? :)
I have a quick question about the Toxic Cloud spell and how folk are using it - are you playing it that the bonus stacks if you play more than one at the same time? I can't see anywhere saying you can't play both at once, but from an 'actually being in it' sort of point of view, does playing two actually make any difference? Bad guy #1 is already in a pea-souper...
Your thoughts?

If you had two Toxic Cloud spells in effect at once, I would add the effect from both of them.
But note that a single character cannot put two of them in effect on the same encounter. So you'd either have to have two different players play them on the same encounter, or you'd have to play one during one encounter than another during a second encounter on the same turn.

Ack, I missed that and did indeed have Ezren go full Dictator with a double-barreled mustard gas launch. Bugger.
Right then - Actually didn't kill that boss last night. Back we go :)
Edit - 'scuse my manners - Thanks HM :)

But if the encounter was of the type "Every character at an open location encounters an xxx" then I suspect you could cast one when the first character resolved the encounter and the second when the next character had her encounter.
Likewise for a boss with more than one combat in their resolution. Cast one with the first fight and the second the the second fight.
Instead of two toxic cloud spells imagine you had Toxic cloud and Incendiary cloud in your hand at the same time. Might make it easier to see what I mean.

I would agree with your first one. As long as there were enough of the spell cards needed to do so this would work: On a Skeleton Horde barrier you could play one when you encounter the barrier, another when the first character encounters an Ancient Skeleton henchman, another when the second character encounters their Ancient Skeleton henchman, etc. So each progressive henchman would be getting more and more dice added against them.
But I disagree on the villain. The villain is only encountered once. The second check to defeat the villain is part of the same encounter.
Encountering A Card
- Evade the card (optional).
- Apply any effects that happen before the encounter, if needed.
- Attempt the check.
- Attempt the next check, if needed.
- Apply any effects that happen after the encounter, if needed.
- Resolve the encounter.
Plus, the spell has to be played at the moment the card is encountered, which is before you even decide to Evade. So if Merisiel encountered a monster, Ezren could play Toxic Cloud, then Merisiel could evade the monster, and Toxic Cloud will still be in effect for the rest of Merisiel's turn.
That also means that if our "mass encounter" barrier example above, if you did want to stack a bunch of cloud spells during one exploration, you should play one when the barrier is encountered, then have Merisiel take the first summoned sonster encounter, play another cloud, and Merisiel could evade. That would be good srategy (assuming that it wasn't an encounter requiring everyone to defeat their summoned monster).

Wait a sec. Why exactly can't you cast one toxic cloud before the first check then another toxic cloud before the second check in a two check fight? To me that's the same thing as casting lightning touch for your first check and then another lightning touch (or frost ray or whatever) for your second check. If it's not the same, please explain further.
Edit - NM I actually read the card, it specifically says you play it when you encounter the bane. Good call Hawkmoon.

Toxic Cloud may not be cast during a check. It is cast when the encounter first happens.
