Bashing Shields

Rules Questions

Greetings Fellow Gamers,

A bashing shield does damage as though two sizes larger, and counts as a +1 weapon.

Can you put further enchantments on the 'weapon' portion (like you could with shield/armor spikes?)

Assuming there is an unlimited budget: could I have a +5 Bashing Shield +5 Adamantine Defending Shield? All on the same 'frame'

Very Respectfully,

Yes. The shield would be Adamantine in both respects; an item is made of a special material or it isn't.

Note that your example shield would have a +5 enhancement bonus to attack and damage, not +6, because the +1 from Bashing doesn't stack. It'd still do its higher weapon die, of course.

Absolutely! I know they wouldn't stack for attack and damage, being both enhancement bonuses.

I was more concerned about adding the +5 enhancement as a weapon to the AC via the defending property. Since it's a 'bonus that stacks with all others'

With that in mind, would a quarterstaff that was +5 defending/+5 defending allow me to add +10 to my AC if I sacrifice all of my offense?

There was an FAQ that said that you can only use the defending property for AC if you use the weapon to attack with that round and forgo the enhancement bonus to the attack and take it as part of the defense. As the description under Defending says "a defending weapon allows the wielder to transfer some or all of the weapon's enhancement bonus to his AC as a bonus that stacks with all others," it appears that you could get the entire +10 to AC. Of course, you MUST strike with both sides of the weapon that round in order to do so.

The Defending property can only apply to the offensive enhancement bonus, but if you possess a second +5 defending weapon, you could add a total of +10 to your AC - but only if you make a full, two-weapon fighting attack.
