Multiclassing into wizard with regards to spellbook?

Rules Questions

I know a wizard begins play with a spell book containing all cantrips and 3 first level spells but if you multiclass into it do you still get that or do you need to buy a spellbook + get 2 for levelling up?

You gain the benefit of becoming a level 1 wizard when you take level 1 in wizard. So yes, a multiclassing character gets all the cantrips and 3+INT level 1 spells in his book.

Most of the time, I've seen it handled two ways:

1. The free spellbook is a class ability and you get it and the requisite spells for free when you multiclass into Wizard. The game is presumed to hand-wave it a bit... maybe you had it all along and were doodling in it until everything came together and "poof", you're a Wizard.

2. You need to buy a spellbook. Most of the time I've seen that you still get your full allotment of spells for free, just that you need to acquire the physical book.

Personally, I consider #1 to be RAW.

And there are a million and one other ways (at least as many ways as there are GMs) to handle this.

So, if you want to multi-class into Wizard, particularly if you're not sure how your GM is likely to react, I'd talk to the GM ahead of time.

Thanks for the advice. Second question what is meant by all cantrips is it all cantrips in the core book, all cantrips in the written books (core + suppliment) all cantrips ever (core + suppliments + unwritten suppliments e.g. they release a new cantrip and poof you instantly know it)?

All cantrips means all cantrips. Every last single one of them.

Liberty's Edge

According to the PRD, there are 22 cantrips in the PFRPG. 20 of them are out of the CRB.

Hmmm so right off the bat you've used up 25 + pages of your 50/100 page spellbook interesting. Thanks for the help.

You could choose not to have them.

Why? In the absence of a true spontaneous caster I'll grab every spell I can lay my paws on (why I don't play sorcerers although I love the inherent power aspect).

I thought you were concerned about the number of pages you were using. I rarely take more than ten cantrips when I play a wizard. You can only prepare four in one day (and I'm certainly not using my bonded item to cast one).

More weight of spellbooks and difficulty in carrying them. I much prefer spontaneous casters (which as I said I don't classify the sorcerer) but if I have to go wizard I'll take every spell I can.
