Russia has announced funeral arrangements for Lt. Gen. Mikhail T.
Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47 assault rifle.
“Comrade Kalashnikov will be buried in a pit of mud with full military
honors,” said General-Major Saiga Molot, a spokesman for the Russian
army. “After a week, we will exhume his body, clean it off, and put him
back to work. We expect that there shall be no issue with his functions.”

When asked about his most famous invention Lt. Gen. Mikhail T. Kalashnikov said:
"I'm proud of my invention, but I'm sad that it is used by terrorists ... I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work — for example a lawn mower."
I always found that quote amazing.
RIP

I would have liked to hear his answer to the next question, "Well, why
didn't you do that instead?".

Because when his friends--soldiers in WWII--are dying in horrible numbers because their Russian rifles are notably inferior to the German ones, he wouldn't solve the problem by building a f~@%ing improved lawnmower?

Forrest Gump drove a lawn mower.

Forrest Gump drove a lawn mower.
It was neither materially or financially feasible to drop lawn mowers or Forrest Gumps on the enemy in World War II, especially since Doctor Who wouldn't cooperate in dragging Tom Hanks back in time to before he was born for testing as a military weapon.

Well the AK was invented in 45 but wasn't actually used till 49, four years after the war, so it wasn't much use then, but it did help the Russian military for decades afterwards. While he's happy with his invention I think he can't help but feel the weight of all that death and destruction on his shoulders, we see the same thing with Alfred Nobel and Robert Oppenheimer, but mainly I think he just would have preferred to have invented something that helped people rather then a weapon that is so durable and successful at killing people. He invented the greatest assault rifle of the 20th century and he'd have rather built a lawnmower.

It is, chum. Duffelblog is to the military what The Onion is mainstream news: satire, mockery, and shameless piss-takes all round. There is a certain degree of respect to this one, though: however ambivalent he felt about some of the end-uses, you can’t deny the man knew his craft.
