Interesting Worms for a Wyrm game?

Advice

So I have another topic started here for a dragon based campaign that I plan on running. I was recently inspired by another thread I saw around here for someone looking for ideas for making a Worm that Walks from a bunch of rat swarms.

I have been thinking of making a few Worms that Walk that could be minions of a Black Dragon BBEG that I will eventually be using. I figure that these might make some good foes prior to facing the Black Dragon herself.

I have been trying to think of some cool base creatures and swarm types to use for these. See, I think instead of just using worms that it would be interesting to use other swarm types. And they could also form into other base creature types than just humanoids. I'm not buying into the only way to create a Worm that Walks is for the swarms to devour a powerful spellcaster. I think it should be possible to create them just from a swarm getting to a certain number/size, existing for a certain period of time and having a strong enough hive mind to grasp spellcasting.

Another change that I think I will make is that when the base creature dies that it will discorperate into the swarms. This would work much like a vampire's gaseous form ability where you would have to kill the swarm as well in order to kill the being entirely/perminantly. I'm considering bumping the CR up by +1 for this as well but I don't know if its actually worth an entire CR for that ability.

So with all that being said, what do you think would be some good ideas for creative and interesting base creatures and swarm creatures that the base creature would be made of?

Also, I was thinking of having some of these guys have their hive mind controlled by some other outside being. So if you have ideas for those as well throw those at me too if you think it is appropriate for this concept.

Examples: Spider swarm that creates a base form that looks like a drow elf female that is being controlled by a Drider.

Dragonfly swarm that creates a base form that looks like an elven half-dragon (with the fluttering wings forming the "scales" on it's skin) who is being controlled by a Pseudodragon.

I had thought a treant might be a cool thing as either a host (base creature) or a hive mind controlling thing. But I don't know what would go good for the swarm or other creature.

Really? Nothing?

I like the idea.

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende has a swarm, that keeps assuming the shape of other creatures:

Obvious creatures to be made from swarms would be giant insects. But also some large humanoid versions like Giants are large golems/clockwork creatures filled with swarms could work.

Also Zombies make good hosts to carry around a swarm.

Neverending Story is one of my favorite movies. The Nothing would be what you are refering to, right? I could do the shape change thing, that would be interesting.

take the weakest dragon you can, and apply cr1 and cr2 templates to it until it's 1cr above the party... and then be confused with what the actual CR is

Lune,

Spoiler:
AP 75
has an Ecology of the Worm That Walks, if you aren't aware of it! In one part it talks about some WTWs that are made of things other than worms.

Really? That will be interesting to look into then.

Essentially even in these books, the type of swarms doesn't change the cr of the worm that walk, he is still cr+2. My favorite in general is the locust one. Locust Worm That Walks is biblical, like apocalypse type of deal.

How about a colossal WtW made out of medium sized creatures...such as humans? Something like that old Clive Barker story.

Eltacolibre: I agree. Locust is interesting. But what form would you have the swarm take?

Son of the Veterinarian: Yeah. I was thinking of that. I was thinking of actually using a swarm of undead. Still not sure what form it would take either though. Any ideas?

A Mothman worms that walk locust variant look alike would be pretty cool in my book.
