New to Golarion

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Hey guys n gals. Our gaming group is switching from 3.5 to Pathfinder. I have about 20 years experience with d&d so mechanics aren't an issue. Learning a whole new campaign setting is tricky.

So, my question is twofold.
1- What region of Golarion do you recommend starting in for a group most familiar with Greyhawk?
2- My pc is going to be a LE half-elf sorcerer. He and his sister (another pc) were orphanedwhen their parents were killed by drow raiders. They then grew up in an orphanage in a mostly human city. What area of Golarion would this scenario be the most plausible?

Thanks in advance.

1) Greyhawk was a key inspiration to us when we were building Golarion, and you'll find lots of familiar themes throughout the world. The city of Absalom is the biggest in the Inner Sea Region where we focus our campaign, and it's very much inspired by the city of Greyhawk (although it's quite a bit bigger). Other regions in Golarion that carry a Greyhawk vibe include but aren't limited to the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, Mediogalti Isle, Varisia, the Hold of Belkzen, Kyonin, the Worldwound, and more.

2) Talk with your GM first—when we first launched the setting, we had drow set up as a secret—very few surface folk believed that they even existed. We did an Adventure Path, "Second Darkness," where the drow made their big debut on Golarion, and since then they're more or less openly known of. They don't often raid against the surface, but their empire, in the underground empire in Sekamina (see Into the Darklands, or the Darklands section in the Inner Sea World Guide) is pretty solidly located under the continent of Avistan. It's widespread too, so you can have drow raids against multiple locations. Varisia is where the first drow raids in "Second Darkness" took place, so that might be a good nomination, I suppose, but anywhere in the northern continent will work.

OH! And welcome to Golarion! :-)

I think the easy answer is Varisia. It was the first region introduced with Pathfinder and doesn't deviate too far from Greyhawk.

For your character purposes, northern Varisia was the setting for Paizo's drow-centric adventure path, so you know they're active in the region; and Riddleport and Magnimar are two human cities nearby where your PC could have grown up.

Thank you both! I'll talk to our gm tonight and run that by him.

Welcome to Golarion!

I know James and Fletch fielded your questions already, but I wanted to drop a link to the Pathfinder Wiki for you. It's a great resource to get some information on the setting and in each article/entry there's a link at the bottom that points to the book the information was sourced from so you can easily figure out which books to pick up that fit your interests.

Hope you and your friends have a blast!

It depends on what time of game you wanna run. If it's a traditional AD&D Dungeon crawl then Varisia is a pretty good place to start.

If you wanna go a more classical horror themed game then Ustalav is the place to be.
