How to find traps in pathfinder

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Me and my buddies have recently started playing pathfinder and we are unsure on how you actually find traps. The way we have been doing it is that they say they are looking for a trap either in the room, on a door or a chest and then do a perception roll to see if they find one. For the room one how does it work for the room in a whole or just for the square in front of them or what?

There's no hard-and-fast rules in the CRB so the way you're doing it is probably fine. Usually for me and mine the Perception check covers a moderate area (about a 20' cube) and covers walls, floors, ceiling (if accessible) and such. Remember: successful perception reveals the presence of a trap and might reveal some clue as to it's activation or effect if a high enough Perception check is made.

Your way sounds better than what we have been doing, I like the area more than just the whole room.

I usually ask players to move through the room and give me a roll. If they make the check and they are with in ~15ft of the trap they notice the trap otherwise it will go off if they step on it.

We used to use a whole room gloss over but now I am really love traps and things that squish players.

As far as i can tell most groups just let the barbarian go first set them off then expend a few charges from a wand of clw and move on
