Different Size Flask of Oil, Holy Water, Alchemist’s Fire, Torches. etc.

Rules Questions

1 Are flasks of oil, holy water, etc. like potions - one size fits all?

2 Does a Storm Giant carry a (size) medium lantern that burns 1 pint of oil per 6 hours? And little 1 pint flasks of oil to feed it? If it he's going to chuck flasks of oil at someone does he throw 1 pint flasks?

3 If he's going to war does he buy 20GP flasks of alchemist's fire that weigh 1 pound and do 1d6 points of damage? Can he throw them without size penalty?

4 Can a tiny imp throw the same size flask without issue?

5 The entry for torches says, "If a torch is used in combat, treat it as a one-handed improvised weapon that deals bludgeoning damage equal to that of a gauntlet of its size, plus 1 point of fire damage."
Does this mean if a large character buys a torch it costs and weighs twice normal- since the gauntlet damage goes from 1d3 to 1d4? Does a large (or huge) torch still do only 1 point of fire damage? Does it still only last 1 hour and shed light in a 20' radius?

One size fits all. That answers pretty much all your questions as you seem to already know the answers.

What Claude said.

As for the torch, yeah, it weighs and costs more and does more damage but still only 1 point of fire damage.

As for the giant with a teensy tiny lantern, he certainly could do that, or he could have one his size - you could argue that the bigger lantern uses more oil and maybe even lights a greater radius if you want, or you could say it's the same amount of light and fuel consumption because it's a normal sized flame in a much bigger lantern housing, but that's up to the GM to make that call.

The rules don't clarify such matters. That would be the GM's job.

I'll go further to say that I know the answer is what I said, even though every time I enlarge, I ask the GM if my healing potions will heal more now that they're bigger.

Suppose you enlarge a healing scroll? Does it heal more?
No. It is still casting the same spell, just like a larger potion casts the same spell.

Hmmm, I guess I could equip storm giants with Special Siege Engine Ammunition. Alchemist's fire 200 gp 10 lbs.

"...deals 4d6 points of fire damage to each creature and wooden structure within 5 feet of the target space, and each creature must make a DC 20 Reflex saving throw or catch on fire (wooden objects automatically catch on fire). Every creature and wooden object within the area between 5 and 30 feet of the target space must make a DC 20 Reflex saving throw or take half the fire damage, but they do not catch on fire."

Or 10 lb wooden kegs of oil as the poor giant's version. They should only need to put a fuse in the first few - after that each one they lob should just "feed the fire".

Around Huge size, I'd start increasing the fire damage from torches—that's the point where it's starting to get really big. A colossal torch is a proper blaze, really.

If he's going to war, he throws boulders that can wreck castles, and calls down lightning. Why should he bother with alchemist fire?

The game is built on the assumption you're playing small to medium humanoid characters. You shouldn't be surprised that it gets wonkier the farther from that assumption you get.

Indeed. I'm now imagining a scenario where a huge creature tries carrying a standard lantern. And finds it's really getting in the way of its own light. (Then again, at that point you really would be, wouldn't you?)

Unless you're using some extreme polymorph stuff (which usually includes new senses too), the most you're getting to is Large, which is still playable with a normal lantern, I think.

Too many players from my group read the boards.... by "Storm Giant" & "Fire" I actually have somewhat different things in mind... ; >
