I believe the argument goes 'my wizard always teleports away to safety after every battle, then uses divination to find the exact spells he'll need for the next day'.

That's a variation with a little more depth than most. I've seen this argument made without that. The player basically believes they are so smart they will always choose the optimal spell.

Anyway, teleport then divination doesn't always work either... I've seen it fail for both players and NPCs multiple times.

ah, and then there's the 'I keep spell slots free so I will insta-memorize the proper spell I need on demand'. And naturally I've spent the 180k or whatever it is to know all the arcane spells on the wizard list!!!

Or the 'I have this ridiculously convulouted defense against anti-wizard tactics that always works' argument. Uh-huh.

The simplest defense is the best. Astral Projection + Aroden's. You cannot kill somebody who was never there.

A wizard who is employing this tactic is beatable, but effectively immortal.

No one in their right mind would spend money learning *all* the arcane spell (Your a cool spell Ooze Puppet, but I'm not spending gold on it.

Though most high level Wizard defense are largely impregnable except against another high level caster. Aroden's Spellbane set to Mage's Disjunction, Antimagic field, Mage's Magnificent Enclosure, Aroden's Spellbane and Dispel Magic, Greater shuts down virtually any hope of your defensive spells being removed, unless the opponent is a similarly situated caster.

Gah, Ninja'd. Well played Artanthos you win this round.

I'd think a Trap the Soul would take out that wizard nicely. Just have to throw the object at him...that's a 'touch'. Then go loot his lair with the simulacarum you made of him that knows all his passwords and secrets.
